Family holidays to Dordogne

Located in the South-West region of France, the Dordogne region is awash with beautiful scenery, natural landscapes and your family will love relaxing in this splendid unspoilt countryside as they explore medieval towns and villages, rivers and spectacular caves within this popular district.  Imagine waking up to the sounds of nature, an abundance of birds including Red Kites, Buzzards, Cuckoos, Woodpeckers and even Kingfishers.  Maybe hire a bike or mount a horse to explore some of the wonderful woodlands and dozens of small villages waiting for you to discover and investigate. That’s only just the beginning as you explore all that Dordogne has to offer your family!

Family days out and attractions in Dordogne
The scenery and quiet will capture your heart and remain in your memory with this truly amazing family destination; so be sure to enjoy the countryside together and have a quiet picnic next to a stream.

Kids never tire of exploring caves the Dordogne region of France has literally hundreds of them (known as 'grottes' in France) with many of them open for the public to visit. Don’t forget a flashlight or better still get them one attached to head gear- they’ll love it! There are two categories for you to explore; caves that are well-known for their unique prehistoric paintings and those for their rock formations, stalactites and stalagmites.

Follow in the historical footsteps of Richard the Lion heart’s third crusade to Jerusalem from the village of Jumilhac-le-Grand.  Also there are horse riding adventures and trekking around the countryside, which is perfect for the beginner with gentle slopes, streams and jumps for the more experienced rider.

Every family has those members that love to throw a line and hopefully catch a fish! Those that don’t can enjoy the fresh air and great outdoors whilst reading a book! Or just relax and unwind in the peace and tranquillity that surrounds them- a game of catch or chase for those that like to be more active.

Musée du Tabac et Musée de la Ville, Bergerac: This is a fascinating little museum containing lots of information about the origins and uses of tobacco as well as the local history.

For the little girls: A collection of exquisite dolls, doll houses and furniture at Musée rêves et miniatures, Brantome.

Musée de la guerre au moyen age, Castelnaud la Chapelle: the chateau, gorgeous views and museum itself, make this the most visited chateau in the area. Kids and grown ups alike will enjoy the great collection of weapons and armour including life size models of larger gear.

Where to stay in Dordogne
Kids will love the fantastic green and tranquil oasis known as Carp and Cats, a one-of-a-kind fishing lake with amenities to suit not just the keen angler, but the entire family. Why not try camping with a twist in a Tepee with Fire Pit- Sleep underneath the stars and cook in the outdoors on an open fire pit for a memorable magical experience never to be forgotten. Or you can relax in a self-contained Luxury Chalet if Indian Tepees are not your style! Boasting fishing, table tennis or badminton and an Adventure Playground the kids will be well entertained meaning some R&R for mum and dad as well!

Malisande  City; Carlux - Charming cottage at a reasonably price in a small valley overlooking the Dordogne valley. Relax with the family around the house as you enjoy the surrounding hills and countryside.

Le Verger;  Savignac-lÉdrier -  is a charming and comfortable old stone house (180 m2) set in it's own gardens with views onto the rolling Perigord countryside complete with a great terrace which is ideal for family barbecues.

Eating with the family in Dordogne
Dordogne abounds with places to eat and you will never be far from something to suit both your taste buds and your pocket. Needless to say it is not all French haute-cuisine; there are many other choices including fast food outlets. The kids will be happy!

Le Plein Sud
: a Typical French Restaurant-come bar that serves a great lunch time set menu with plenty of options. Worth a visit- if just for the Frenchness of it all!

Café Eymet: Cyber café, coffee and paninis - this is a great spot with a kiddie’s playroom that will give you a bit of a break, if you need one! At least you can enjoy a good coffee without kids climbing all over you!

McDonalds: What can I say? It’s just like any other McDonalds but here the staff  talk French. One plus it does have a great climbing / playground which will keep the kids entertained! Burgers and fries anyone?

When to go to Dordogne
Generally speaking; the summer months of July and August, are of course the most popular times to visit the Dordogne.  May, June and September are also beautiful times of year to visit as the weather is almost always still warm. The spring sees an even more beautiful lush landscape; and offers a perfect time for walking and cycling in the Dordogne, since the summer can be rather hot for these activities.
But no matter when you visit, the Dordogne promises a superb and unforgettable family holiday.
