Family holidays to Italy

Family holidays are exciting and a great opportunity to spend some time together. When you’ve got the kids in tow remember that you simply need to be a little more organised, a tad more patient and if you’ve got a baby- just don’t forget your stroller especially since you’re heading for Italy! Italy is great for families because it is such a child-friendly country. Italians tend to have very strong family values and love to make families from abroad feel most welcome. Get ready for a thrilling adventure as you discover 2,500 years of vibrant history, a timeless culture, artistic and architectural masterpieces every where you go, as well as amazing countryside from the sugar sand beaches of Sardinia to the spectacular mountains of the Alps. Welcome to Italy!
Family days out and attractions in Italy
Italy is sure to delight your kids, but if you're worried they'll get tired of traipsing through museums and churches every day, check out some of the following kid friendly alternatives and then you can sneak in a few more spectacular historical museums as well! Don’t forget Italy also has some gorgeous beaches like San Remo, with long breakwaters that create small natural pools which are perfect for families.
Grand Canal, Venice - Kids will love seeing the city of Venice by gondola and although pricy it’s well worth the expense. Don’t forget to barter! Or share a gondola with another family to reduce the cost!
Saint Mark's Bell Tower, Venice - The view from the top of Saint Mark's Basilica is extra special. There is a charge, but unlike many other view points there’s no stairs. Instead it’s an elevator all the way to the top of the Bell Tower which is a real bonus when you’ve got kids with you!
Pompeii or Herculaneum, Naples - Herculaneum is less famous than its neighbouring city Pompeii, but equally interesting. Herculaneum was ruined by a terrible avalanche of mud and because it takes less time to tour it’s better for younger children than Pompeii. It's also somewhat less crowded. Take a train if you are going to visit either Pompeii or Herculaneum as it makes for a really pleasant day out and is much nicer than dealing with traffic.
The Colosseum - Get ready for the eerie majesty of The Colosseum where bloodthirsty spectators gathered round to watch gladiators kill each other many years ago.  Kids will find it interesting as well as cool!
Child friendly accommodation and places to stay in Italy
Consider one of the fantastic holiday parks throughout Italy; as they really cater for families, especially for kids of all ages! When you arrive at any one of the terrific family parks; it’s quite a sight! Play grounds, mini golf, swimming pools and families having fun every where!
These parks all have entertainment for you and your family; most have their own special children's club programme throughout the day and early evening, which means a break for you! Perfect!
Another good idea is to find out what specials some of the larger hotels have available; such as when children stay and eat free of charge if staying with their parents. As if they would be on their own?
Cuisine and Family restaurants in Italy
Italy is full of culinary delights that will tempt even the fussiest of eaters. From Parma's Parmesan cheese and Prosciutto ham, to Ferrara's cherries and salami, to the meat sauces and pasta of Bologna; it’s all tasty and delicious! If however the traditional flavours of Italy are a little rich for your kid’s taste buds, they can always tuck into some pasta or pizza, and then finish of with some Italian ice-cream which is known as Galati.
When to take a family holiday to Italy
The best times to visit Italy are during the spring and autumn months as this time offers the nicest weather, neither too hot nor cold and rainy! Do be prepared for the crowds though, and did you know that Italy has a great rail service?
Practically every town in Italy has lots of churches, squares, museums and art galleries as well as traditional ceremonies and events taking place throughout the country at various times during the year. Remember that there is so much to see and do in Italy that you may not get to see every thing. That’s no problem as it means that you can always come back to visit a different part of the country next time.
