Family holidays to Iceland
Iceland offers families a warm welcome when they visit, is safe to travel, clean and is jam packed with entertainment, action and so many things to do; you could stay for ever and not get bored! And; despite what its chilly-sounding name might suggest, Iceland does not freeze to a halt in winter! In fact; you can be certain that the kids will love swimming in a geothermal-heated outdoor pool during a blizzard! With lots of fun, no wonder Iceland is now such a popular family travel destination.
Family days out in Iceland
Iceland is so incredibly child-friendly and no matter what the season, there’s always plenty for families to do together. Discover the capital city of Reykjavik and even let them loose on Laugarvegur to do some shopping for music, clothes, food or candy! Also take them to Oskjuhlid Hill for some space age fun and a Viking display. There is also a man-made geyser which spouts every few minutes. Spend a day at the Reykjavik Zoo together and then why not why not finish the day with a swim in one of many thermal pools?
Hot pools are a way of life in Iceland so they’re everywhere meaning that you should find one close to your accommodation, what could be better than squeaky clean kids that are exhausted and definitely ready for bed after a full day out and about? These aren’t just ordinary baths or pools; but huge heated pools full of pool toys, little bubbling hotpots and water-slides that will delight everyone! In the morning you can drive out to the Blue Lagoon and check that one out! Don’t forget to go horseriding on lovely Icelandic ponies, skidooing on the glaciers and hunting for elves in Hafnarfjordur, reputed home to other worldly beings! Of course you can also rent a bike, go bird-watching, book a glacier tour or go whale watching - it’s all here for you to enjoy! Visiting Iceland is all about families having lots of fun together.
Child friendly accommodation in Iceland
Family holidays in Iceland begin with typical Scandinavian charm as accommodation here is nothing short of what you would expect of a distinctly polite culture and beautiful land. There are hotels and guesthouses to suit all tastes and budgets, as well as farm-houses, hostel accommodation and camping grounds for those that like to holiday in the great outdoors. It may be a bit chilly in winter though! Obviously self-catering is a viable option for families so that you can whip up a meal and fed the troops without too much fuss!
Family restaurants and local cuisine
If you want a burger go to Hamborgarabúllan on Myrargata. When in Iceland, go for lamb or seafood rather than beef; as the cows here are not lazy fattened up heifers, meaning they are a little on the tough side! The kids should enjoy a hotdog; they're made with good quality lamb meat. Vitabar is good for ableu cheese burger with fries. Icelandic Fish & Chips is super tasty and for really good Thaifood try KruaThai.
Buy your groceries and sundries at Bonus, as it has much lower prices than almost all other grocery stores. While there do try out the Skyr drink which is like yogurt but it's not! Good energy food and low in fat. There are lots of bakeries sprinkled about town...fresh bread is always a great family filler-upper! Don’t forget that the thermal pools have good kiosks where you could enjoy a quick simple meal before heading home and tucking the little ones, totally exhausted - and straight into bed!
