Places to go with kids in Sri Lanka
Lots of families are choosing Sri Lanka for their holiday destination; and why wouldn’t they? This is one place that offers inspirational journeys that take you to the very heart of wildlife safaris, jungles and a Sri Lankan family adventure is sure to include elephants, rafting and wilderness parks, as well as tea plantations, spice gardens and tropical beaches. Enjoy a Jeep ride or cycle around the medieval capital of Polonnaruwa where you will be entertained by Kandyan dancers, drummers and firewalkers. Be sure to visit the Elephant Orphanage at Pinnawela. This is not to be missed!

Not enough activity for your family? Why not also check these out then? How about lunch in one of the 24 wildlife reserves which are home to leopards, wild elephants, sloth bears, wild boar and buffalo? But just don’t end up on the menu! Smile at a cute purple-faced leaf monkey and see if you can spot porcupines and anteaters. Don’t forget to keep a look out for crocodiles, snakes and a vast number of native birds.

Family restaurants and local cuisine
Being one of the world's producers of top quality tea, every day begins and every meal ends with a lovely cup of hot brewed tea, usually served with milk and sugar. Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon enjoys a cuisine that is rice based and spice orientated; with wonderfully varied flavors from the nations that either colonized or traded with her many years ago. Sesame balls and potato alluwa are small sweetmeats that are popular for snacking on between meals.
Even in modern city homes; the more traditional methods of slow cooking are favored with many meals cooked in shallow, round-bottomed clay pots called chatties which are placed on rough, soot-blackened brick hearths in which wood fires burn. Fiery hot curry with rice and small side of vegetables, meat or fish are typical of a Sri Lankan meal.

As these may be too hot for children to eat; they may enjoy Hoppers: doughy, rice-flour crepes eaten with golden syrup or palm sugar. Or Love Cake: a gorgeous cake of cashews and honey with nutmeg and cardamom or Vattalappam, a rich egg custard made with palm sugar, coconut milk and cardamom. There are always plenty of tropical fruits including passion fruit, mango and papaya. There is even a KFC in Ja-Ela for those that need a break from curries!

A family Sri Lankan holiday is what ever you want it to be; a relaxing seaside escape, cultural feast or an action packed jungle safari- or better still why not just do everything?
