Animal Kingdom Park - Walt Disney World Florida

Disney’s Animal Kingdom has a greater diversity of animals than the average game reserve in Africa, and this doesn’t include the Mickey Mouse or Captain Nemo varieties!  Separated into seven different zones, the Animal Kingdom has jungle walks, tropical forest paths, gorillas, wildlife safaris, tigers, bugs, dinosaurs, a fossil play park, a steam train ride, a stroke the animals enclosure and much more. In fact, the Animal Kingdom is so chock full of adventures and attractions for children that there’s no way you’ll be able to see it all in one day.  Oh and of course there is live entertainment on tap and the odd parade to ensure you wont ever get bored. African, Asian and American specialities are part of the unique dining experiences, whether you want a full restaurant meal or just a quick snack or drink. Disney’s Animal Kingdom is not only the largest animal attraction in the world; it is also one of the biggest theme parks. Have a nice day…or two. VISIT WALT DISNEY WORLD >

Animal Kingdom - Favourites:

Finding Nemo - The Musical
Finding Nemo - The Musical is a condensed version of the film performed as a Broadway Musical. The theatre has been transformed into the undersea world of Nemo and you have great views from whichever of the 1500 seats you choose. All the favourite characters are acted out by very large scale puppets held by visible actors who do the speaking part. It sounds a bit weird and is, but it really works. During the almost 40 minute show you see the main stories acted out in a mesmerising whirl of puppets, dancers, acrobats and actors against an animated backdrop. There’s no let up in the action and it is over too soon.  A good tip is to go to the afternoon show, as the ‘Theater in the Wild’ where it is performed is air-conditioned, and also try to arrive early. The show is suitable for all ages.  Explore Animal Kingdom >

Kilimanjaro Safaris
The Animal Kingdom’s Kilimanjaro is about the same distance from London as the real Mount Kilimanjaro and its game parks. The main differences are that you’ll see a greater variety of animals on safari here, in a considerably shorter time and it will be certainly cost a lot less. Of course it’s not the real thing but it’s a really exciting way of seeing ‘wild’ animals. You bump across the plains in a safari jeep with your guide, passing elephants, giraffes and even a couple of rare rhinos. The setting is uncannily realistic and after finishing all too soon you will just want to do it again, especially as each Kilimanjaro Safari is different! This is an absolutely must do attraction and needless to say a timed fast pass is almost essential.  Explore Animal Kingdom >

Dinosaur
‘Dinosaur’ is a ride in a time machine, taking you back to just a few minutes before the extinction of the dinosaurs started. You are on a quest to bring one of them back and the pressure is on to do it before the meteor strikes. The Jurassic Park type world that you lurch through is full of life-size audio-animatronic dinosaurs that do not like your intrusion one little bit. The special effects and attention to detail make it very realistic, so much so that it’s a bit too scary for little ones. If you want to see how pterodactyls fly or what a styracosaurus likes for breakfast, then climb aboard. It’s a very popular ride so come early or late in the day or use a fast pass.  Explore Animal Kingdom >

Expedition Everest - Legend of the Forbidden
Mount Everest dominates the Animal Kingdom and a thrilling ride up, down, round and through it, is what you get on a roller coaster ride at Expedition Everest - Legend of the Forbidden. This is probably Animal Kingdom’s most popular non-wild animal attraction as almost everyone likes a scary ride, and scary it certainly is. Your open carriage climbs precipitous slopes and plunges both forward and backwards down impossible gradients at incredible speeds. Although there are no real animals to look out for there is the dreaded Yeti who tries his best to stop the train. This is Disney so of course this legendary snowman doesn’t succeed. However it can be a bit scary for the little ones so think age 7 and up. Fast pass is almost obligatory for this highly popular ride.  Explore Animal Kingdom >

Pangani Forest Exploration Trail
If your family enjoys a Sunday nature walk in a Park or a National Trust forest then the Pangani Forest Exploration Trail is definitely for you. There are a few differences of course. You will be seeing comical meerkats rather than squirrels, parakeets replace blue tits, there are antelopes instead of deer and the dense tropical foliage is definitely different to our gentle shaded woods. You will also see the odd hippo in its underwater home or gorillas who are safely enclosed behind clear glass. The Trail is also one of the rare places in the park where you can go at your own pace, that is if you can get the kids to slow down and not race to the next swinging rope bridge. It often tops the popularity stakes of the park and it is easy to see why. Crowds are heaviest in the morning but try to avoid the hottest part of the day as gorillas usually have their siesta time then.  Explore Animal Kingdom >
