Epcot - Walt Disney World Florida

Epcot is really two theme parks rolled into one. Future World focuses, as the name implies, on visions of the future using all the latest IT and technological developments. Some of the shows and displays will blow your mind away such as the simulated journeys to Mars or in a glider over California, a turtle that talks to you through the walls of one of the biggest aquariums in the world plus the most advanced Computer Games Centre east of Silicon Valley. The other half, World Showcase, is a collection of National Pavilions based on the brilliant idea that if you can’t get to foreign countries like Norway or Japan, let’s bring them here! If you are feeling a mite homesick after your week away from home don’t miss out on the United Kingdom Pavilion in its Hampton Court setting, complete with maze. You can even have pint in the Rose and Crown pub while you listen to the Beatles. There are similar deja-vu settings and entertainment for all the other countries. So if you fancy a bit of pizza in Venice or noodles in China’s forbidden city, Epcot's the place. All a bit over the top, but great fun and the children will love it. One tip: The most popular restaurants get booked up quickly so book as much in advance as possible. Epcot – Favourites
The Seas with Nemo & Friends‘The Seas with Nemo & Friends’ is Epcot’s massive sea-life aquarium with of course more than a few added Disney touches. In its centre is a unique circular platform from which you have an underwater view of thousands of different marine animals from dolphins to angelfish. Younger children have a number of unmissable attractions on offer. Take them for a ride on a ‘Clamobile’ that takes the family on a journey with Nemo and his friends through the ocean depths with uncanny realism. They will also enjoy learning about the life of sharks with lots of fun interactive activities in ‘Bruce's SharkWorld’. However their highlight and maybe yours will be the ‘Turtle Talk with Crush Show’ where Crush, the famous turtle in the Nemo film talks to them directly from his underwater home. It is one of the most amazing animated simulations you will ever see and will definitely convince the under fives that turtles can talk. No problem with queues. Explore Epcot > Turtle Talk with Crush In any other aquarium, turtles will swim lazily around or bask on rocks but what they don’t do is swim up to the window and engage in conversation. But hey this is Disney and this is a very special turtle. It’s none other than Crush, the laid back supporting star of the Pixar film ’Finding Nemo’ and your children can literally engage in ‘Turtle Talk with Crush’. This stunning mixture of animation, special effects and all too real ocean water, takes place in a small theatre, with the aquarium window as the stage / screen. Crush engages in a lively question and answer session with the audience and he appears so alive he has the kids entranced. Many of his questions involve sea-life conservation so it is educational as well as hugely entertaining. The show lasts about 20 minutes and is on at scheduled times, available from the Times Guide. Expect to wait for this highly popular event. It is probably best suited for the under-tens but you’ll probably enjoy it as well! Explore Epcot > Mission Space
![]() ‘Mission: SPACE’ is the closest you can come to experiencing what it is like to be an astronaut. Designed with the help of NASA scientists, you are taken on a simulated ride in a 4-person rocket to Mars and back. You are first given a training session and assigned your role in the crew. There are two missions to choose from. In the Orange Team you will experience the most realistic acceleration against gravity and it may be a little upsetting for those with weak tums. The Green Team experiences the same journey but most of the acceleration simulation is missing. The journey itself is packed full of special visual effects from thrusting through the clouds to landing on the red surface of Mars. There's lots to do after you land back on Earth in the SPACE Advanced Training Lab, where you can explore the Martian surface on foot or play some advanced space games. ‘Mission: SPACE’ is possibly the world’s most technically advanced theme park attraction, so expect heavy crowds. Use a fast pass or aim to arrive as early as possible. Definitely not suitable for young children, i.e. below age 8 or so. Explore Epcot >
Test Track ‘Test Track’, in its own pavilion, gives you an in-depth experience of how prototype cars are tested for every kind of road and handling condition. It’s design was largely effected by General Motors and while you wait for your test drive ride you pass by a fascinating exhibition of all this company’s latest vehicles and a mock-up of one of their assembly lines (Note this bit is missed if you use Fast Pass). The drive itself takes place in a very sporty seven-seater convertible, which is taken through seven very exciting performance tests, from how it handles a skid, to its response to bitter cold (providing a very welcome respite in Orlando!) The highlight though comes at the very end with an outside ride around a steeply banked track at 60 miles per hour. It is suitable for all but very young children and of course is very popular. Use a fast pass if you don’t like queuing but the waiting area is very interesting. An added bonus for the kids is the Cool Wash area just outside where they can pretend that they are a car being passed through a car wash! Explore Epcot > IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth Every Disney theme park puts on a spectacular nighttime show and ‘IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth’ at Epcot maintains the awesome Disney standard of excellence. A combination of blazing lasers, synchronised fountains, stirring sound tracks, pyrotechnic displays and the world’s first spherical video screen illustrates the story of Earth’s past, present and future. The setting is the World Showcase Lagoon and the show can be viewed from anywhere you can see the water surface, although the best spots are outside the Italian or Canadian Pavilions and on the bridges connecting France and UK or China and Germany. Crowds are heavy so choose your spot a good half an hour before the scheduled time. Explore Epcot > Captain EO returns! The classic 3D musical space fantasy adventure starring Michael Jackson is returning to the Imagination! Pavilion. In the same Epcot theatre as it’s original debut, you can take nostalgic look at this popular performance, which was originally shown in the 80’s and early 90’s at Epcot. Now is the chance for parents to share this with their own kids! (Captain EO will be replacing the Honey I Shrunk the Audience attraction for a limited engagement. Explore Epcot >
![]() Maelstrom
‘Maelstrom’ is a classic Disney family ride on a Viking ship. You set out from a 10th Century Norwegian village on your usual pillaging mission which turns out to be a bit more adventurous and a bit longer (like over a thousand years!) than most. A storm in the North Sea you are used to, but attacks by pirates, menacing trolls and the odd polar bear is just not fair. However in true Disney style you arrive back to safety, shaken and a bit stirred. On disembarking you are treated to a delightful short film showing you what Norway is really like. All in all, this is a very entertaining and educational experience. It’s popular so grab a Fast Pass or go early. It is suitable for all ages as long as you hold little hands tightly. Explore Epcot >
