Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge

Fitzwilliam Museum overview

The Fitzwilliam Museum is Cambridge’s most prestigious museum and art gallery with some world famous artworks and precious artefacts. First impressions of its lofty marbled interior can be a bit daunting to children but the museum has devised a very childfriendly programme to get them involved. Their ‘Fitz Family Trails’ have activities based on interesting themes for children of different ... ages. The ones over Christmas for example were based on Nativity and Star themes. In their well-illustrated booklets, the children are told where they have to look in the gallery for particular artworks .The booklets also provide simple background notes on a painting or sculpture for example. Once they have found what they are looking for there are simple questions to answer and space for them to do sketches. It is all very well thought out and will keep the kids well entertained. You can also give them a treat by taking them for lunch in the lovely Courtyard Cafe in the museum.

Great museum in Grand building

The Fitzwilliam is close to the centre of Cambridge and because entry is free it is easy to pop in for a short visits e.g. when you are out shopping! We do this quite regularly and the museum is also widely used by schools in the area as a resource – I accompanied both my son and daughter and their respective classes to see the Greek and Egyptian collections at the museum over the past few years! The building itself is stunning, and there are always children’s activity packs available. We love the museum shop in particular, as there is a lovely range of gifts available. Sometimes we spend longer in the gift shop than in some of the galleries! There are also a range of activities on offer for families throughout the year.
