Walls of Chester overview
They have all gone: the Roman sentries, the anxious Saxons, the Royalist soldiers, the Victorian worthies and in their place, why not you and the kids? It's a very pleasant couple of hours stroll ...
around the whole length of it. Up, down and along its sandstone ramparts, passing a Roman amphitheatre, a castle, a medieval bridge over the River Dee, a famous Gothic Cathedral, a civil war museum and there is even a racecourse. There are plenty of spots to descend for a picnic on the river or a spot of lunch in the many cafes and bars of this popular holiday town.
Roman Walls

Visited with: Child
Visited Chester recently with our two children and thought we’d check out some of the sights you recommended. It was a nice day for a change so we climbed onto the wall by the clock tower in the main street and headed towards the river. We enjoyed looking down on the streets below (and the kids liked peering into the office windows!) After about ten minutes we reached the river section and the old bridge. The wall came down to street level at this point so we headed back into town and just a short walk up the main street reached the Grosvenor Museum. It was billed as child friendly and free to go in! The children did enjoy it, especially the Roman bits, although to be honest we did not stay very long as it was near lunchtime. We all enjoyed the walk and hope to come back in the summer and walk the other way and have a picnic down by the river.
