Lost Gardens of Heligan overview

What a lovely name, conjuring up romantic images of a lost arcadia...and it really is. This is the archetype of the classic English country garden, lovingly restored after almost a century of ... neglect. If your children enjoyed seeing or reading The Secret Garden then you must bring them here. Their website gives just a hint of the delights in store for you.

We have been numerous of times with our children right from when they were a baby. Its great for little ones although their legs might get a bit tired before you've explored the whole place and you can get to the whole of the lost valley with a buggy. However despite this it is definetely worth the trip and money. Wonderful cafe and food! Entertains our kids all day!

The Lost Gardens of Heligan are really enchanting! I thought the kids might be bored but actually we all enjoyed almost an entire day here. There are some absolutely beautiful areas where trees covered in coloured blooms cascade gently around you, really idyllic! Our kids were told off for trying to climb the trees though! There is a raised wooden path through the jungle area, where you pass ponds and banana trees, which was fun. We had a picnic in a grassy area but afterwards found a lovely wooded area by a lake and wondered if that would have been a better spot. There are some cute pocket-money toys in the souvenir shop for children.

We have been to Heligan with the children a number of times and have really enjoyed it every time. The gardens are quite extensive and simply beautiful. We have mostly been during summer months when there are lots colours everywhere. We took a trail on our last visit around the entire garden and our favourite bit was the walk ways through the jungle area, where the kids began to play Indiana Jones and the Lost Temple of Heligan! They also have webcams from the gardens where you can watch films of birds and bats nesting. The café is great, cream teas are excellent! Brilliant day out.
