Hill Top overview
Hill Top is part of the legacy that Beatrix Potter left in Cumbria. A pretty little17th century aptly named farmhouse overlooking beautiful countryside, Hill Top was bought by Beatrix Potter in 1905 ...
from the royalties received from her timeless ‘Peter Rabbit’ books, still loved by children today. Beatrix Potter continued to write many more stories at Hill Top, and the house is now managed by the National Trust and contains many of Beatrix Potter’s personal possessions, and references to her stories and characters. Hill Top is a shrine dedicated to a children’s author who loved nature and became heavily involved in conservation in the Lake District. Children will love the cottage garden, and though not a very big site, it should be on everyone’s must-do list when in the Lake District. Helped by the success of the recent film, ‘Miss Potter’, Hill Top is extremely popular, so entry to the house is by timed tickets only, to help protect and preserve the property. Book early to avoid disappointment!

Hill Top is the house that Beatrix Potter lived in when she was writing all her stories about Peter Rabbit and his friends. It is now owned and run by the National Trust and it is well worth a visit in you are in Ambleside, although it does not take very long to go around. The house looks as if it is been left as it was when Beatrix Potter lived in it, each room is full of period furniture and there are references to her work everywhere. There is also a lovely garden outside with flowers, fruit and vegetables growing.

We visited Hill Top last summer in July whilst on holiday. Unfortunately we did not book early enough in the day as tickets are limited and sold on a timed entry basis. However, we still went and had a look around the lovely garden with beautiful views, and the children were able to do a quiz trail in the garden. This is a major attarction in the area, and the car park is small. We had to wait for about 25 minutes until somone left, before we could park. A lovely family visit to make, next time we go to the Lake district we will book in advance!
