Dalton Castle overview
Dalton Castle is managed by the National Trust. It was restored in the 1960’s and its three floors currently house small exhibitions relating to history of Cumbria and display work by local artist ...
George Romney. It is a not strictly a castle but a rectangular stone tower, called a “Peel” or “Pele”Tower. Dalton Castle was originally built to defend the town of Dalton-in-Furness and the then powerful Furness Abbey, from Scottish invaders. Over the centuries it has served both as a courthouse and prison. Dalton Castle is located on the High Street in Dalton-on-Furness, and coupled with a visit to Furness Abbey, gives a great insight into life in medieval Cumbria. Entry is free but opening hours are limited so check before visiting.
