Hardknott Castle Roman Fort overview
Hardknott Castle Roman Fort, which in Roman times was known as “Mediobogdum” is managed by English Heritage. The ruins date back to the first and second century, built along with many other forts ...
in this area, under the command of Emperor Hadrian. Hardknott Castle Roman Fort was built to defend Hardknott Pass, which has the reputation of being one of the steepest roads and scariest drives in the Lake District! If you can overcome nerves and get there, you will be rewarded with spectacular panoramic views of the Scafells and Eskdale Valley. Excavations on the site have revealed that the three acres of Hardknott Fort comprised of headquarters, bath house, granaries, and possibly a parade area. There are no facilities nearby but information boards provide much insight into Roman military life.
