Dove Cottage overview

Do you have a child interested in English, Literature or English Painting? If so then a visit here is a must. You literally step back two hundred years into William’s world. Into a cottage so ... perfectly preserved that the fire is lit and even his bed is made. Both his everyday and literary life are splendidly brought to life through impressive displays of manuscripts, paintings and domestic objects, with the help of friendly knowledgeable guides. You will learn the real story behind ‘Ode to a Daffodil’, his famous guests reaction to the dire food on offer and even where he sat in the garden. You even get to take a peek in the suitcase he took on his Continental travels, probably where Ryanair got its idea for baggage allowance! There is also an excellent art gallery of British Art from that period. The tour doesn’t last too long and there is enough to hold the interest of younger children if you don’t linger too long in the Art Gallery section.

Wordsworth's friend sneaked out of the window!

30 Mar 2010
Visited with: Child, Teenager
We visited Dove Cottage whilst on holiday in Cumbria last summer. The children were surprised at how small the rooms in the cottage were, and really enjoyed listening to the guide talking about Wordsworth and his life at Dove Cottage. The little anecdotes made the talks really funny (Wordsworth's friend didn't like the food so sneaked out of the window to go to the pub!) and interesting. We got drenched whilst walking around the tiny but very pretty cottage garden! The children then spent about half an hour in the activity room, writing a poem and sketching/colouring a picture. As the weather was nicer by this time, we didn’t spend much time in the Art Gallery. There are lots of lovely Wordsworth–related book marks, books and small gifts in to buy in the shop. Well worth a visit!
