Beatrix Potter Gallery overview
The Beatrix Potter Gallery in Hawkshead is home to a changing exhibition of Beatrix Potter’s original watercolours and sketches. This 17th century property was originally the office of her husband, ...
William Heelis, a local solicitor, and was bequeathed to the National Trust in 1943, along with many other Beatrix Potter properties. It is also thought to be the model for Tabitha Twitchit’s shop, featured in her stories. Visitors to the Beatrix Potter Gallery can learn much about the life of Beatrix Potter and her avid support of the National Trust, as well as see her exquisite drawings of the charming and unique animal characters from her books. Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddleduck and friends, are still as popular which children today. The Lake District has inspired many writers, but Beatrix Potter is probably the most popular, and literary enthusiasts young and old alike, cannot fail to be impressed by the story of this determined lady’s life.

We spent an hour or so at the Beatrix Potter Gallery whilst on holiday in Cumbria last year. We all enjoyed looking at this exhibition of Beatrix Potter’s original watercolours and sketches. The children enjoyed doing the quiz based around Beatrix Potter stories, and some other younger children who were visiting at the same time, sat with their parents and read Beatrix Potter stories. There was also an exhibition on the film Miss Potter, and having visited the Beatrix Potter related attractions in the Lake District, my children wanted to watch the film again, and this time showed far more interest in it! This visit also inspired them to try sketching animals with a large watercolour pencil set bought at the World of Beatrix Potter attraction! This gallery is probably of more interest to older children.
