Lakes Aquarium overview

The Lakes Aquarium in Newby Bridge is on the edge of Lake Windermere, surrounded by beautiful scenery. You can get to the Aquarium either by car (there is an onsite car park) or by one of the boats ... that travel on the Lake. A visit to the museum takes only an hour or so but it is well worth it if you have children who like sea life. There are displays of fish from different areas of the UK, particularly those close to the Museum like Morecambe Bay and the English Lake District exhibits, There is also a tunnel that you can walk through in the ‘Lake Windermere Tank’ which gives you a complete view of the sea life that lives in the Lake. There are displays from around the world as well, from the Americas, Asia and Africa. Lakes Aquarium has a small shop near the exit and toilet facilities. There are no refreshments sold but these are available nearby.

In a lovely location right on the edge of Lake Windermere and you can actually get here by one of lakes cruisers or even by steam train which stops here too! Or, if you are driving it is two minutes away from Newby Bridge but be aware that it is a Pay&Display carpark. The aquarium is quite small and it can get really busy so at times, it can feel a little crowded. It doesn't take very long to get around the whole aquarium so it does seem quite expensive, especially when you have to pay for car parking separately too. The children loved going over and under the huge tanks and the little ones were fascinated by the diving ducks!

The Lakes Aquarium in Cumbria is a good place to take children for about an hour – there isn’t really enough to do there for longer than that though. On your visit you can see fish and mammals from abroad in the ‘Asia’ and ‘Africa’ tanks, including, otters and tortoises as well as those closer to home. There is an English Lake District tank, a Morecambe Bay tank and a Lake Windermere tank – this was my son’s particular favourite as it has a viewing tunnel running through it which means you can have a 180% view of the tank and its inhabitants which include massive catfish!
