Pooh Sticks Bridge and Pooh Walks overview

Located on the northern edge of the Ashdown Forest, between Forest Row and Crowborough, Pooh Sticks Bridge attracts Winnie the Pooh fans from far and wide. The wooden bridge is just as one might have ... imagined, with simple wooden supports and platform with curved struts at each end, shaded under twisting tree branches. Pooh Sticks Bridge is idyllic on sunny afternoons, when the light becomes mottled and golden, and laughing children hugging well-worn Pooh bear teddies excitedly drop sticks from the bridge and race to watch them emerge from the other side. A car park is located close by at Chuck Hatch. For the more adventurous, there are walking guides that incorporate other ‘Pooh’ sites, such as ‘The Enchanted Place’, ‘Roo’s Sandy Pit’ and ‘Eeyore’s Sad and Gloomy Place’. These guides are available from local tourist offices (a good one is located in the Ashdown Forest Llama Park).

Great fun!

On the early spring day we visited Pooh Sticks Bridge the water was high and the current quite strong, which proved idea conditions for Pooh Sticks. The kids engaged enthusiastically with the game, rushing from one side of the bridge to the other to excitedly await sticks coming in to view. Fearing that previous visitors may have taken all the nearby sticks, we collected some on the walk down, which was a good move as there were hardly any to be found around the Pooh Sticks Bridge! We found bigger sticks better (easier to see) than smaller sticks.

Pooh Sticks Bridge is located in beautiful surroundings. We had a lovely walk through the fields from The Hatch Inn but you can park closer, at Pooh Car Park. The bridge itself is bigger than I expected and a few families were able to play pooh sticks at the same time. It is a strangely addictive game and the children spent more than half an hour dropping sticks! There is no real picnic area by the bridge, but there are small areas either side to relax. Pooh Sticks Bridge is a little tricky to find though, as the footpath is not sign posted. We walked there via the south path, off Marsh Green Lane, but were lucky to have a map with us.
