Colchester Castle Museum overview

Delight your children and take them to Colchester Castle Museum for a really hands on experience of history. There are lots of displays where children are encouraged to touch and feel, including ... dressing up in Togas and Roman armour. In this Norman Castle, built over a Roman temple, children will be enthralled and experience history first hand, learning how life was lived in past ages. There is a room to eat lunch with a vending machine but if the weather is nice why not eat outside in the beautiful park surrounding the castle. Your ticket allows you to come and go throughout the day and most people will spend around 2 hours actually in the castle. During school holidays there are workshops to make pottery, medieval tiles or even armour. A small additional fee will be charged so your child can take home their efforts. It is a good idea to check Colchester Castle website for workshops as it is necessary to book in advance. There are guided tours also available to go underneath the castle into the Roman Temple and also onto the roof of the castle to see the views. This is a great place to visit as a family and money can be saved by buying a family ticket.

The Colchester Castle Museum is situated in Colchester Castle Park in Colchester, Essex. Colchester was once the capital of Roman Britain and as such the Castle has a great deal of historical importance. When visiting people can see the historical buildings and look at the important historical artefacts that are situated there, including, gold coins and medallions and the famous Colchester Vase. There are also a number of exhibitions that take place throughout the year. There is no restaurant at the castle but there are plenty of these available in the nearby town centre. There is however, a drinks vending machine available and there is also a lunchroom which is provided for school visits and which can also be used by families for picnics.

My children had a fabulous time at Colchester Castle Museum since like all children they love to dress up and here there is plenty of opportunity. My children thought it was particularly funny to see themselves dressed in Roman armour and Togas and even managed to dress me up too! This is a very child friendly museum with lots of displays where your children are encouraged to touch and feel and parents can relax. We were amazed by how small adult feet were in the Middle Ages and my children had fun trying on the shoes and clogs. The staff love talking to children about the exhibits and my children enjoyed showing off what they had learnt at school. We bought a packed lunch and ate outside in the lovely park but if it is raining there is a room inside the castle where you can eat. We are coming back again in the school holidays as my children want to go to one of the workshop events held and make pottery or something else messy. There is a small extra charge but they get to take their efforts home. If you visit Colchester town centre this has to be the best place to visit with children.
