Museum of Science and Industry overview

You may not think that kids would be interested in crawling through a smelly Victorian sewer or being deafened by in a cotton-spinning mill, but they certainly seem to be here. There is more than ... enough to keep them occupied as they interact with holograms, try out exciting scientifically based experiments or go on a treasure hunt through the hidden recesses of the museum. When exhaustion sets in, take them off for a snack or meal in the second floor restaurant with its great view or just relax in the more informal ground floor caf

We've been here a couple of times with our two young children. If I try to think of something that was most memorable for them, it will always be the mini train ride outside that takes you up towards where they film Corrie, and back down again. For the grown ups there is lots to see about industrial Manchester and its surrounding areas, including information for further afield such as Tameside where we live, so it is interesting in that respect. My favourite part was the bit on the textile industry in the North West, especially as that is where my husband and most of his family started out. You get to go in a days-gone-by mill, and see how workers used to go about their daily business. There's also a building with transport, with model tramways which was well received, and another with a section on electricity and gas. Across the road you can also look at old transport. Being in a regenerated part of Manchester and within spitting distance of the city centre there is always somewhere good nearby to eat, or finish the day off. We have never filled a full day at MOSI, but we've certainly filled a morning. I think when the kids are a bit older it will interest them more, but for now it's more for the grown ups... apart from the train ride, that is!

We enjoyed our day out to the Museum of Science and Industry. It was reasonably priced and there was plenty to do. We enjoyed looking at all the old trains and cars and planes in the transport part. Our little boy also enjoyed the hands on experiments and we spent about an hour in that room alone. We also enjoyed looking at the streets and underground part of the visit and how we used to live. Our little boy found it ammusing that people used to live the way they did in the victorian times. We had lunch in the cafe which was expensive but they had a lot of variety and healthy options. They also did kids lunch boxes which was great. We spent a good few hours here and we are looking forward to going again soon as they have many events on here. The Museum of Science and Industry is a great day out but smaller children may find it boring.

visit to the museum

We visited the museum today 13/03/2010 with two children. The main interactive science section was actually closed due to refurbishment but the other sections were open. We went into the power hall first which was very cold but there was a little cafe with small selection so we grabbed a coffee to warm up. There was also a craft area where the kids could create a little something t take home. We then went to the air and space hall which holds the old aeroplanes, bikes and cars etc. It was interesting to look at what we used to use. The kids were a little bored as you couldn't touch though. There were lifts, toilets and a small gift shop. Parking outside the museum was close and not very busy for a saturday. I would check the website to make sure all the areas are open before going along but it is all free so worth a trip.
