Gilbert White's House & the Oates Museum overview

Gilbert White’s House & Garden and The Oates Museum will appeal to those families who enjoy both history and beautiful surroundings. There is an original museum commemorating important individuals ... in the exploration of the natural world, set in an historic village in beautiful countryside. Having paid admission, you are free to come and go as often as you please that day. Families can view the House and Museum, go for a walk around the gardens and park, take tea in the Parlour and shop in the old billiard room. A great way to use up your little ones energy is to walk up the famous Gilbert White’s Zigzag through the hanging beechwoods. Gilbert White's House & the Oates Museum is accessible by both car and train. There are also toilets with baby changing, and most of the paths are accessible for pushchairs.

Gilbert White's House & the Oates Museum

My first visit to Gilbert White's House with my 7 year old niece. She loved it! It's a beautiful house set in glorious gardens, which she enjoyed exploring and the staff were friendly and wlecoming, offering her a pair of binoculars or a magnifying glass to borrow while she investigated the various parts of the house, which she loved! She enjoyed doing the Activity sheet provided and I couldn't tear her away from the tea parlour because of the cakes OR the shop because of the colourful array of items for sale! I liked the fact that she learnt a bit about natural history (she loves our garden and any animal or bird anyway) and was able to experience how someone had lived in "the olden days" - another fascination of hers! The museum charges £2.00 for over 5s (under 16s), but children get free entry during school holidays. Well worth a visit.
