Verulamium Museum, St Albans

Verulamium Museum overview

Verulamium was once an important Roman town just North of London and excavations to uncover its fascinating history have been ongoing for more than 50 years, with the best of the discoveries to be found in the enchanting and very child friendly Verulamium Museum. The beautifully tessellated mosaic floors and walls are on a par with those on display in Rome or Pompeii. There are togas and amour to ... dress up in (child size only) and there’s one particular video sequence which is just hilarious as the erstwhile occupant of the skeleton on display strolls around modern St Albans pointing out where he lived and what life was like then. This is a truly imaginative and well laid out museum and the entrance fee is very modest!

Verulamium Museum is situated in Verulamium Park, it has a large carpark outside but in the summer be warned you'll be lucky to get a space. The museum itself is entirely on one level which made it brilliant for our buggy and the friendly helpful staff gave us a selection of activity sheets which kept the toddler happy. We loved looking at the skeletons and the mosaics. the shop is bright and has lots of the usual pocket money gifts. Not a whole day of activity, rather a few hours but outside the museum there's a lovely park and a rather nice cafe. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.
