Rochester Castle overview
Rochester Castle was built during the Norman era and is situated on the top of a hill on the edge of the town. Today the castle is maintained by English Heritage. There is no car park available ...
specifically for the castle but there are a number of parking spaces in the town with easy access to the castle. Visitors to the castle can go on a tour and for a nominal fee get an audio guide which gives you more information as you explore the castle. There are wonderful views of the town from the castle itself. You can also explore the picturesque castle grounds where there are often fairs and concerts. There are no refreshment facilities available at the castle there are many different cafes and restaurants in the town. Please note that because of the nature of the castle buggies are not really suitable so this destination may be better for older children.

I have been to this beautiful castle many times as Rochester is my hometown. The castle garden is beautiful with ice cream kiosks and benches around the edge, the well kept flat lawns make an ideal place for a picnic with amazing views of the castle. The castle itself has some very steep winding steps so if you have very young children, be prepared to carry them, it can get a bit tricky in places! Once at the top, the views are amazing. Don’t forget to visit the cathedral, which is only a minute’s walk from the castle. The nearby high street has many boutique and craft shops and plenty of restaurants and cafes. There are toilets in the castle grounds. Parking can be tricky but you can normally find a spot along the esplanade, which runs parallel to the castle, failing that, there are a few pay and display car parks around.

Rochester Castle in Kent is a good place to take children for a day trip. It is on the top of a hill and is a great place for boys (and girls!) who like to play at being Knights and fighting. They can see how Knights and members of the court would have lived and explore the Castle and its history – including the walls that are 12ft thick in places! The Castle also hosts special events throughout the year that children can enjoy such as the Dicken’s Fair in December and the Sweeps Festival in May which has fairground rides and games they can play.
