Huntleys overview

Huntleys started off life as an ice cream parlour in a shed and has gradually expanded to become a family attraction. The home made ice cream is still a major seller and comes in an impressive range ... of flavours, but there is now a vegetable market, butchers, fish market and dry goods shop. For the adults in the party, there’s a chance to try the cheeses and meats before you buy and they often have tastings for other goods. Antiques, wine, furniture and chocolate are also on sale. For the kids, apart from the ice cream, flakes and raspberry sauce experience, the real draw is the Maze (opening again in summer) and the Owl and Birds of Prey Roadshow, which exhibits regularly at the site. Exotic and local birds are on display with their handlers and there is a chance to see flying displays in good weather and to handle the birds. The Roadshow organisers also have facilities to rehabilitate injured birds of prey to release them to the wild, and children can find out more about that, as well as joining the Junior Raptors Club.

Enjoy an ice-cream with an owl

Huntleys is in a good location for a stop off on a long car journey, and on a sunny day, it’s great to sit with the kids and enjoy an ice-cream on their outdoor picnic tables. The Birds of Prey Roadshow fascinated the toddler that I was with and the handlers took the birds to children at other tables, much to their delight. I would have preferred the handlers to tell people a bit more about the status of the birds in the wild, to stress that wild birds are not pets and to focus on British birds, rather than exotics, but by and large they were doing a decent job at getting kids to appreciate birds. The fish pond was also a big hit and kept the aforementioned toddler quiet for long enough for me to finish my ice-cream, which was delicious. I got tempted into buying quite a lot from the shop, which wasn’t cheap, but is excellent quality. All in all, Huntleys is a nice break in the journey, but I wouldn’t make it the focus of a visit.
