Museum of Childhood at Bethnal Green overview

Obviously a child friendly museum and one guaranteed to interest all members of the family. This branch of the Victoria and Albert specializes in toys and its vast and amazing collections makes ... Hamleys look like a corner shop! Every variety of doll, with incredible costumes, the houses they would have lived from every era, marionettes, toy soldiers, trains, just think of any popular toy and its here. Interactive areas also help children to engage with exhibits and learn about childhood in the past and in different parts of the world. It really is just fantastic.

step into the magical world of childhood, past and present

Spread over two floors the museum of childhood is brimming with everything related to childhood, from toys to furniture and clothing, some which date back to the 1600's. It is both fascinating and compelling and the whole family were mesmerised by each display. Although much is contained behind glass, interaction was encouraged and included rides on traditional rocking horses, a sandpit, dolls house, duplo table, dressing up and an arts and crafts area. For adults there's a reminder of their own youth with 'weeble wobbles' and 'tiny tears'! As you'd expect the building is very child friendly, with a buggy park at the entrance, lifts, good toilet facilities, and a basement full of tables and chairs to picnic at. There's also a cafe and a gift shop. Exhibitions, displays and events are held regulary. Entry is free and is open daily. Its location means that getting there may not be straightforward with young children in tow but it's well worth it. Outside there's a large grassy area to enable little one's to let off steam.

So much to do

What a fantastic place! There is so much to do at The Museum of Childhood and it’s always a good choice on a rainy or cold day when parks are out of the question. We go quite often and there are so many little play areas, including a huge boat full of sand, an under 3’s enclosed play area full of toys and a Lego play area. It’s so interesting to see the different toys kids have played with throughout the years in the exhibition. There’s a great café too where my son would recommend the pizza slices whereas I prefer the homemade soup.
