This is a great place to take children. I went with my two-year-old son and he loved it. He especially liked the interactive room with lots of stuffed animals, some you can touch. He loved the spinning wheel that you turn and when it lands on a particular animal, it makes its noise, I couldn’t get him away from this one! There were so many exhibitions to see. Another favourite was the music room where you can put on headphones and listen to different music from different countries, there are big buttons to press and skip your way through. The gardens are very pretty and there is a small animal enclosure for viewing only. There are some lovely views of the city skyline from the bandstand where you will also find lots of picnic tables. The museum is very child friendly with lifts everywhere and lots of pushchair bays so you can go off and explore. The museum and gardens are absolutely free, they sometimes have one off exhibitions, which you can choose to pay and see. A great day out!

We loved our trip to the Horniman Museum and would definitely go again. The Aquarium is lots of fun for children and there is lots of learn there and pictures to colour in. We also loved the natural life room, which has a real bee hive inside the room! The kids can watch the bees in the hive and learn about the process. There is a large room with stuffed animal exhibits, but the smaller room is hands-on and there is lots for the kids to do and discover. We were not so interested in the textile exhibition, but did like the music room. We had lunch at the café, which was great and quite reasonable. After we walked through the gardens and found a little animal pen right at the back, which the kids liked.

Great day out for families

The Horniman is a lovely museum for families; we love it and have been a number of times. The museum is not huge, which is ideal really, as it means you can get round everything in one trip! We like the aquarium best, located in the basement, where they have a frog pond and a sea shore tank complete with rocks and anenomies. in all the tanks children can see above and below the water, which is both educational and fun. There are some coloured frogs and tropical fish here also. Upstairs they have a great music room with a myriad of musical instruments from across the globe, spanning centuries. There is a music room where children can actually try out some interesting global musical instruments. Outside you can picnic in the gardens and there is a great view of London from this spot.

This small but perfectly formed museum is a gem. One of those wonderfully eclectic personal collections of really interesting stuff. There are rooms covering collections from around the world, stuffed animals of all shapes and sizes including a full sized walrus and a superb collection of musical instruments with interactive games tables that play each instrument for you. There are excellent workshops and talks for children laid on and several hands on rooms with stuff to bang and poke and experiment with. The cafe is great but popular - pick your rime carefully. Pushchair access is very good with lifts and ramps, and the inevitable but rather good shop.

Great for a weekend family outing!

The Horniman is a really unique museum not far from Dulwich, at the very top of Lordship lane. It has recently benefitted from a good old refurb, and there's loads on to keep children of all ages entertained right from the moment you set foot at the entrance where you're confronted with a giant totem pole! Inside there's a real mixture of rooms including a music hall, and some fascinating stuffed animals preserved from Victorian times (look out for the tubby walrus). Another great feature is the aquarium with jellyfish and seahorses. We went in the summer, and spent a fair amount of time in the gardens where there are various animals you can feed. There's also a cafe and baby changing facilities. Best of all it's free!
