Dad's Army Museum overview
Just around the corner from the old town hall in Thetford you’ll find the Dad’s ArmyMuseum. This volunteer-run attraction is, as the name suggests, dedicated to the much loved wartime television ...
series. It’s located in the old fire station building in Cage Lane, and although small is well worth a visit. The volunteers take it upon themselves to keep visitors well informed about the history of Dad’s Army and delight in recalling funny anecdotes. The volunteers don’t only act as guides though; they also enjoy dressing up as the characters for special events like 1940s style parties. It’s a very hands-on museum and children will enjoy being able to pick up and examine the exhibits. They can even try on Captain Mainwaring’s cap and sit at his desk whilst proud family members take snapshots. While you’re there you’ll not only learn about Dad’s Army, you’ll learn a lot about Thetford’s real Home Guard too.If you have local connections you might like to check out the huge list of names on the wall for family members who may have enlisted.
Dad's Army Museum - Great for Kids Too

On arrival at the Dad's Army museum in Thetford we were greeted by a gentleman in a yellow t-shirt who I instantly recognised as a double for Captain Mainwaring. The great thing about the Dad's Army museum is it's run by volunteers, who when they're not being tour guides, actually dress up as characters from the series. They were so welcoming, and as soon as we entered the museum Captain Mainwaring began chatting enthusiastically about the show. Although the museum is quite small with only three rooms to visit, it's packed with fascinating memorabilia from the show as well as information about Thetford's real Home Guard. The best part for me was being able to sit at Captain Mainwaring's desk, slip on his cap, pick up his telephone and have a photograph taken. Such a great memento to take home and treasure. Dad's Army is a good old fashioned comedy for all the family and you're allowed to touch practically all of the exhibits. We enjoyed tooting the horn on the heavy iron bicycle which must have weighed a ton and been incredibly difficult to ride. These volunteers are absolutely wonderful and their enthusiasm is catching. They are planning an unveiling of Captain Mainwaring's bronze statue in the town during June 2010 so we'll be back to join in the celebrations. I should also note that it's free to enter the museum although we were more than happy to leave a donation.
