Lakenheath Fen overview
The RSPB Lakenheath Fen Reserve is situated around 4 ½ miles from the small market town of Brandon in west Suffolk. Up until twelve years ago it was nothing more than a giant carrot field but after ...
flooding the area and planting 300,000 reeds it was transformed into a picturesque bird sanctuary. Nowadays you can spend literally hours watching and listening out for rare and beautiful species such as the brightly coloured golden orioles or the hobby (a falcon which likes to grab its prey and eat it mid-flight). What makes Lakenheath Fen particularly good for children is that entrance is free whilst the visitor centre provides some great activities to encourage them to learn about nature. Children can borrow a backpack from the visitor centre, and this includes a bird spotting book and a pair of binoculars. There is also a club they can join with a friendly tour leader who will teach them the rudiments of pond dipping amongst other activities. There is a picnic area close to the visitor centre if you fancy a tranquil lunch before heading back into town, and baby-changing facilities are available in the toilets. There are several nature trails to follow but the Brandon fen family trail is probably the best due to its short length and firm footpath; ideal when pushing heavy prams and buggies.
