Nowton Park overview

Nowton Park, originally part of a private Victorian estate, was taken over by St Edmundsbury Borough Council in 1985 and is now open daily to the public as a recreation park. Nowton Park covers about ... 200 acres of beautiful countryside with woodland and meadows. There are three way-marked trails, each between 1-2 miles in length, so easily walked even by young children. The trails can get very muddy in winter, so may not be suitable for all types of pushchairs or wheelchairs. There are two football pitches as well as an all-weather pitch for games, a playground for younger children and a shop where you can buy refreshments and small pocket money toys. A wide variety of organised activities for the whole family are held at Nowton Park, as well as country craft and conservation workshops. The annual Nowton Park Country Fair, held on 3rd Sunday of June, is a fantastic family day out, and not to be missed!

Town park, with playing fields and walks

We have often visited this lovely little town park. It has a play area for younger children, right next to the picnic area, shop and toilets (with baby changing facilities). The playground is heavily used by local families. My children are too old for the playground but we still do the walks when we go to Bury, the longest being only about two miles long and so easily done in an hour long visit to the park. I love going in the spring in particular – we have just been this weekend and the Lime tree avenue planted with thousands of daffodils really is a lovely sight after months of dreary grey winter!
