The Meare at Thorpeness overview
Visiting Thorpeness with your children is like going back in time to a land of fairy tales. In 1910 the whole area flooded and this inspired the boating lake known as a ‘Meare’ since it is man ...
made. Around the 64 acre Meare is a mock Tudor village and a water tower known as ‘The House in the Clouds’ since the actual water tower is made to look like a house. Thorpeness caters well for children of all ages with its vast beaches, play area, 1m deep boating lake and lakeside tearooms, which provide picnics and snacks. The Meare itself has over 100 boats including rowing, kayaks, canoes, punts, dinghies and sailing boats, with many staff on hand to assist with stranded boats. Children are encouraged to try out boating in this shallow lake where there are many islands and channels marked with names of the Peter Pan theme. In August the Thorpeness Regatta takes place and this is a great time to visit with children to see boat races and displays and a grand fireworks event in the evening. In the nearby town of Aldeburgh a carnival takes place at the same time.

Whenever my children and I fancy a day at the seaside one of our favourite places is Thorpeness because it has such unusual sights and a large boating lake. The chief talking point for my children is the ‘House in the Clouds’ which overlooks the boating lake. The house on the top is actually a water tower and the tower is actually a house! It looks spectacular and makes the boating lake seem unreal somehow which is not surprising when you consider that the whole idea of the lake and surrounding area came from Peter Pan. We always have great fun rowing on the lake. Last time we were there my two teenage daughters were much embarrassed when they got stuck in the middle of the lake to be rescued by a teenage lad working there. There are many types of boats suitable for various age children and the whole lake although huge is less than 1m deep to make it child friendly. This really is a lovely place to come and there is a lovely beach close by.
