Old Sarum overview

Sounds more like an aged Bourbon Whiskey than an Iron Age fort, but that is what it is or rather was. It must have been a good spot to defend as it underwent many management changes as it passed from ... Ancient Britons, Romans, Saxons and Normans, all of whom left their bits and pieces. What it is today is a fabulous spot for a family picnic as you can tuck into lunch whilst enjoying the beautiful rolling landscape of the Wilshire chalk downs and with a bit, or maybe a lot of imagination, remember the poor souls who over the centuries stood sentry duty waiting for an attacking army that invariably came.

Old Sarum

We were looking for somewhere to stop off on the way home from our holiday and chose the iron age fort Old Sarum. We had a picnic to eat and bought the kids some ice cream from the shop onsite. There’s a lot of room here to run about and quite a bit of information about the history on signs around the site. The views are quite spectacular; I think the adults enjoyed the views more than the ruins! Our kids loved finding the steps in the old ruins and basically spent our break there trying to climb on everything. Interesting and historic!
