Coate Water Country Park overview
The expansive parklands, reservoir and lake of Coate Water were created in 1820. Situated on the south side of Swindon, the area has been declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest, due to its ...
surrounding wildflower meadows. The park now hosts numerous activities for the all the family. A miniature railway operated by the North Wilts Model Engineering Society runs on Sundays, weather permitting, and the 'pitch and putt' and 'mini golf' are open throughout the year. There are many walks around the park and most are suitable for wheelchair users. The most popular walk, around the lake, is 1.75 miles and takes around 45 minutes. Bicycles are available to hire, enabling families to venture on longer trails. A kiosk sells refreshments and there are large picnic and barbeque areas so families can bring a rug and relax. The main parking area is small but an overflow field is available during summer.
A cheap day out

We visited on a sunny day and it was quite crowded. They had opened up an overflow car park so there was plenty of room to park. After feeding the ducks and accidently dropping our ball in the lake (luckily we got it back later) we walked round to the miniature railway which runs on Sunday afternoons in good weather. They were running a couple of different trains and for a small charge you can ride round their fairly long track. My son could have spent all afternoon here but we managed to tempt him away with the offer of an ice-cream. There is also crazy golf but we didn’t get time to try this out. A good day out without having to spend too much.

Coate Water

We had a lovely time at Coate Water, the weather was good and the place had a very relaxed feel about it. We started with a couple of rides on the trains, now my son is 8yrs old he prefers to go round without me. This weekend they had placed soft toy jungle animals around the track for children to spot. We then walked on to the play area which is great for kids of all ages. We are not too keen on the sandy floor there but most of the kids don’t seem to mind it. We didn’t walk all the way round the lake but did stop to feed the ducks and then get an ice cream. The lake isn’t particularly clean but there was lots of ducks, swans and geese swimming around which was nice to watch.
