York Minster overview
In Medieval Europe, great cathedrals were slowly and lovingly built over generations by the most talented and gifted of architects, craftsmen and artisans of the time. York Minster is one of ...
Britain’s best examples, with its awesome space defined and filled with the finest stonework and stained glass. Join one of the free guided tours to fully appreciate the majesty and beauty of this fully functioning church. A highlight for children is being able to see the gargoyles close up from the top of the Tower with a great view of the historic streets of the city an added bonus.
A must-do in York!

We visited York Minster last Easter whilst on a short weekend break in York. This was our first time in York so we took the advantage of the guided tour round York Minster. It was fascinating to learn about the history, and easier for the children to listen and have key features pointed out, rather walk around and try and read everything. The architecture and ornate sculpture is stunning, even the children were impressed. My son (9 years old) did get a bit bored towards the end of the tour (he was looking forward to his choice of visit – Jorvick!) but we kept him occupied by giving him the camera to take as many pictures he could of different features within York Minster! Well worth a visit.

We visited York Minster with our son last year and really enjoyed it - I wasn't sure if it was a good place to take children but it turned out to be okay. We walked around the grounds of the cathedral first and then had a guided tour inside which was very interesting, particularly as we visited just before Easter and they had the ‘Stations of the Cross’ displayed in the church which added something to the tour. My son was able to walk around with us too and we weren’t made to feel awkward with him making a little noise.
