Great British Piers

What could be more British than a stroll along the pier with the kids on a summer afternoon. The smell of the sea air is mixed with the faint whiff of doughnuts or fish and chips smothered in vinegar. The seagulls’ cries are almost drowned out by the squeals from the Haunted House or Dodgems. There are posters advertising shows with celebrities you’ve almost heard of, mixed now with ones for Lazer Quest or Toy Story 3 in the new 4D cinema. Clearly these great marine monuments to Victorian vacationers are here to stay.

It made us curious about how many piers still survive around our coasts (there are over 50!) and how many we have on Childfriendly, barely a tenth of that number! So if there is a pier where you are living or holidaying this summer why not tell us about it?
