Lago di Trasimeno overview
Lago di Trasimeno is the largest lake in central Italy and is the only place in landlocked Umbria where you can take the kids for a day at the beach. Good places to swim are from the beaches close to ...
Castiglione or Torricella or from the lido in Tuoro. For the very best swimming however, take a boat trip from San Feliciano to the lake’s smallest island, the almost uninhabited ‘Isola Polvese’. The largest island, boringly named ‘Isola Maggiore’, has no beaches but does have an interesting 15th century village with a regular ferry service from Castigilione. Lago di Trasimeno also offers a variety of organized Water Sports with Passignano being the main centre. By the way, for historical buffs this is the area where Hannibal defeated the Roman army and there are plenty of reminders of this famous battle still around.
