Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum overview
There is absolutely no problem about where to take the kids for a long and interesting day out in Glasgow. This huge museum and art gallery, housed in impressive Victorian splendour, has recently ...
been restored and it is now the most visited attraction in Scotland. It has stunning displays of everything from mammoths to paintings by Van Gogh. The technology is cutting edge and there are always more than one exhibition or event for children of all ages. If it’s a nice day, the nearby Kelvingrove Park makes a lovely spot for a walk, play or picnic.

We’d heard this place was worth visiting yet we weren’t expecting such architectural splendour from Kelvingrove. Once inside we continued to be memorised by its scale and size of not just its interior – also the range and quality of art and displays for all to wonder to at. On arrival we headed for the café to plan our attack of the venue and we were greeted with an organ recital – an omen we were in for a good time. Selfishly I opted to leave the children with their dad and go my separate ways around Kelvingrove. From gallery to gallery and floor to floor all the paintings and cabinets of curiosity are displayed at heights visible for youngsters. There is even a min-museum for the under fives. Next to each painting there is not just the name, date and title of the piece there is also a general description about the work that does not ridicule the art novice or patronise the expert. There are heaps of things to see here that you’ll probably need a complete day to get round the building. We spent a good two hours before my two children became a little tired of having their brains exercised. As we enjoyed ourselves here we wanted to leave with a memento and were pleasantly surprised to discover that we had to ask where the shop was. On reflection that’s why we’d had a good time – the children hadn’t seen anything to pester us for.
