Edinburgh Zoo overview

Zoos are always on any 'family days out' agenda and Edinburgh Zoo, with its beautiful setting and myriad of animals, is a great choice. Plan your visit by checking out the full programme of events: ... guided family tours, keeper talks and hands-on animal encounters with play areas. Alternatively you can just stroll about taking in the odd hilltop safari ride past those interesting myriads with the occasional stop for ice cream or a cuppa.

Really great place

I really do enjoy going to this zoo! The prices are getting a bit too steep as you are now £50 for a family ticket! but nonetheless you can spend the whole day here easy, there is so much to see and do, loads of different animals, play parks, animal encounters where you get to touch and hold creepy crawlies, a cafe to grab some food they've also built a high ropes play area and brought in some pandas! The only thing I can fault it on is the price.

I went to Edinburgh zoo not too long ago and Natalie(aged 3) loved it! theres so much to see and to do. If I was writing this review about a year ago I would say very dissapointing as theres not a lot of animals but now, after giving it another go, it was very fun. Theres things such as animal antics where a creepy crawly or small animal comes out and the children get to learn about it and touch/hold it (we got a cockroach, yuck!) Theres also the penguin parade which is the highlight of the day, depending on how the penguins are feeling they come out and waddle around the walkway (everytime i've been quite a few have came out) Theres also rainbow landing which is when you get a small container of bird food and you go into a room of free flying birds and they come down onto your arm to eat their food and not to forget the budongo (excuse my spelling) trail where you get to see gorillas and chimps at there best and learn a lot of fascinating stuff about them. Overall a really good day, very tiring as it involves a lot of walking around and I would suggest going on a sunny day! Onlt downside i'd say is the overpriced food so take a picnic.

The tiger chased us and a parrot sat on Daddy's hand

What more can I say! We had a wondeful day at Edinburgh Zoo. It's set on one of Edinburgh's seven hills so it's a jolly steep walk around - good for justifying the somewhat predictable, but fine, food in the cafe, and the inevitable ice cream - especially if you're pushing three children, as we were. There's a little bus you can get to go around, but you have to wait for it, and ours weren't keen on that idea! Highlights - the tiger watching us and stalking us along the edge of the enclosure, the lemur waving at our 3 year old, the spider monkey research centre (the babies were absolute fascinated by the primates of all sizes but we must have spent a good half hour in here, just watching them do their stuff, and they (the babies!) were in stitches, and definitely the Rainbow Landings exhibit. They give you a little cup of nectar, and the birds land on you to sip at it. It's incredible to be that close to these beautiful birds, and our three were in heaven. Like all zoos it is expensive, but I think it's worth it, and I don't think they'll ever get bored of it. The money all goes to conservation and upkeep too, so it's not being wasted. Out of school holidays it was pretty quiet too, which was nice. Oh, but Mercedes the Polar Bear isn't there any more (she's been moved North to the Highland Wildlife Park at Kingussie, where she has a much bigger (and colder) enclosure). Just so you know...

A fun day out at the zoo

Edinburgh Zoo is a brilliant day out. We all really enjoyed ourselves and couldn't believe how quickly the day passed. The highlight was the Penguin Parade at lunchtime. Although its built on a hill there's a FREE safari bus to take you up to the top which is a big help for little legs. Fortunately it remained dry when we were there I wouldn't think it would be as enjoyable on a wet day although there is plenty of shelter where you can still view the animals. The cafe was OK - bowls of soup and paninis but it was very busy. I noticed they did have a microwave available for mums needing to heat babyfood. There were plenty of places to have a picnic if the weather allows - we went in Feb so it was a bit chilly! There's loads of different animals to see although no elephants or giraffes or snakes! The entrance fee is quite expensive. We were lucky as one of the children was given a family pass as a birthday present.
