Family Days Out in Swindon

There’s a load for families to do for a family day out in Swindon. For rail enthusiasts it’s interesting to note that Swindon was chosen as the site for Great Western Railways’ railway works by the great civil engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 1840. On the site of the old works there is now STEAM the Museum of the Great Western Railway which houses a fantastic family friendly series of exhibits about the works there, the people who worked in it and all the great locomotives that passed through. It’s a fun filled museum with lots of interactive displays and hands-on entertainment that the kids will love getting involved in. If the weather’s good then a wander round Coate Water Country Park is certainly worth the effort. The park has some lovely open grounds as well as a large reservoir where you’ll find numerous birds to feed and watch. There are play areas, paddling pools and mini golf courses as well as bikes for hire for those wanting to venture a little further. Another great spot to head is Lotmead Farm, a working family-owned Pick-Your-Own and Dairy farm where you can watch the cows being milked and then help yourself to some of their delicious fruit and vegetables.
