Ogmore Castle and Merthyr Mawr overview
Ogmore Castle is an impressive set of Norman ruins in a rural setting on the banks of the river Ewenny, just a stones throw away from Ogmore by Sea. The castle is surrounded by a large grass moat and ...
entry is free. Visitors can also cross the set of stepping-stones across the River Ewenny to Merthyr Mawr, but please be advised that this is subject to the tide and is unsuitable for small children. Once you have braved the stones, it is just a short walk to the picturesque hamlet of Merthyr Mawr, where visitors can appreciate a collection of 'chocolate box' thatched cottages. There is also a swinging bridge known locally as 'The Dipping Bridge’, as it is where sheep were dipped, a church and a vast expanse of sand dunes. There are also a number of farms, which offer visitors the chance to pick their own fruit and vegetables. There are no facilities at Ogmore Castle or Merthyr Mawr, apart from a free car park, but be aware that cars have been known to be swept away at high tide due to the close proximity to the river. There is a public house across the road from Ogmore Castle called 'The Pelican in her Piety' which welcomes families. Children’s meals are served, high chairs and baby changing facilities are available and there is an outside seating area with parking.

Ogmore castle is located on ogmore by sea and its location is just by the mouth of the river. It is a substantial set of castle ruins as it was occupied untill the 19th century. It is surrounded by a large moat and your children will have hours of fun running around these ruins. Once they are tired of the castle, you can take a walk across the stepping stones which are only visile at low tide. These are obviouslynot suitable for young children so you will need to carry them. I managed to carry a bike across but it was difficult. Once you are across it is a short walk to the village of Merthyr Mawr. This is a rural idyll which is a collection of thatched cottages and a beautiful church. until recengtly one was serving cream teas but unfortunately it burnt down. If you are feeling particularly energetic you can take a walk to merthyr mawr sand dunes. This has been the setting of many fims i.e. last of the mohicans, due to the size of the dunes and its similarity to a desert. The big dipper is the biggest sand dune in europe and is great fun for the kids as they can walk the hard walk but slide all the way down. This excellent for your children and pet dogs too! You can walk over the sand dunes to porthcawl beach but this is about a five mile walk so not advisable with small children. All in all a really good day out
