Cardiff Castle overview

Cardiff Castle has had a long history, from Roman Fort to Victorian mansion. There are guided tours of the castle, which take in the spectacular views over the city and give you a great sense of its ... history. The tour guides are experts in pointing out all the interesting bits, especially to the kids and there are multimedia guides for the outside areas of the Castle. Not much left of the Roman occupation but the Victorians left all their fabulous furnishings and behind, and they are really something to see.

Great castle

A historical day out which we combined with a trip to the city centre. It was a bit showery when we were there so whilst we did look around the grounds we spent more time indoors. We joined a tour of the castle apartments. This was very interesting but we did find the kids wanted to move on quicker than the tour guide did so it may be better to explore the area yourself. The main café is great for food and there are TVs showing jousting which the kids enjoyed. The wartime tunnels were also worth visiting and we played hide and seek with the children which was fun. Quite expensive to get in but an amazing piece of history to see.

A historical day out

This was a lovely castle, really clean and well kept. It’s located right in the heart of the city centre so sits alongside both old and new buildings. A great place to take the kids with plenty of places to explore including the Norman keep high up on a hill (you can climb right to the top and the views are amazing), the battlement walk and the wartime tunnels. In the main house you can do a fascinating trail through the castle apartments searching for animals in each room. My son was also impressed with the amazing décor of the different rooms. Outside the house is a falconry area with owls and birds of prey which my son enjoyed watching. We took a picnic and ate on benches outside but there is a large café too serving meals, hot drinks, snacks and ice creams. We didn’t have time to stay for the tour but for older children this could be interesting, there are also audio guides available for both adults and children. A great day out, definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.
