National History Museum overview

What a great use for a Welsh Castle to make it the setting for an open-air museum of Welsh Life both present and past. The National History Museum is in the grounds of St Fagans Castle and there are ... so many things for the family to see that after just a few hours here and you will be experts on all things Welsh, from rarebits to rabbits. There are re-erected historical buildings to walk around, demonstrations of farm work in the fields and farmyard and there is always some interesting exhibition taking place. Also check on whether there is a festival or music and dance event when you intend to visit.

Free educational but fun day out.

I have been to st.fagans many times over the years and it is definitely best appreciated on a sunny day as it consists of 40 different historical buildings scattered over quite a large area. From an old farm, bakery, photography shop where you can dress up in Victorian clothes and have a photo taken (this is an extra cost and quite expensive). There is a pottery, shops, beautiful terraced gardens, iron age fort houses and lots more. A fun and educational day out, better for children slightly older as you are unable to take prams or buggies into each house. There is a small children's play area but it's nothing special but the place itself is really interesting day out and FREE. Just remember to take a pack lunch as the cafe is abit pricey and although the place is free the car park is £3.00. Still a bargain day out.

This a great place to take your kids on a nice sunny day. There are lots of outdoor exhibits and also animals to see. It is not so good if its raining and it also doesn't accommodate babies in buggies very well. It is free to get in but you do have to pay for parking and the on site cafe and restaurant are very expensive. They have a small childs eating area in the cafe but this could be bigger.

Museum of Welsh Life

"The Museum of Welsh Life is St Fagans is a lovely day out for children. It covers the history of life in Wales from Celtic times to the present day. You can visit an old fashioned smithy, woollen mill and saddlers workshop where people are still working in traditional ways and there is also a farm where you can see animals. My particular favourite though is a row of six workmen’s cottages, each decorated in a specific time period from 1805 - 1985 showing how people's homes have changed throughout the ages which helps children realise how much things have changed over time."

I recently visted St Fagans (otherwise known as the museum of welsh life) with my 7 month old daughter. Unfortunately you are unable to make the most of everything that is on offer as pushchairs are not allowed in many of the buildings. I think this is a venue more suited to children who are old enough to walk without a pushchair.
