Caernarfon Castle overview

Caernarfon Castle dominates the town of Caernarfon and is a World Heritage Site. It's unusual as it has Polygonal towers and colour coded stones and Prince of Wales, HRH Prince Charles’s ... investiture took place here in 1969. Visiting families to Caernarfon Castle can enjoy a walk around its extensive grounds, exploring its battlements, and also regular exhibitions and events. Facilities at Caernarfon Castle include a gift shop that sells visitor guides full of information about the castle, car parking and toilets. Please be advised that much of the castle is unsuitable for pushchairs.

Built for a fun day out

A majestic castle that houses not one but two museums in its grounds, Caenarfon is a splendid example of Wales’ historic icons. It’s also a great day out for all the family. Although it doesn’t have the scenic views of Conwy it does have lots more to explore, and can easily occupy a child’s imagination for a good couple of hours. Caenarfon castle does have toilets on site as well as a shop selling goodies yet no refreshments. You’re welcome to bring prams and buggies but you won’t to be able to get them to the top of the towers via the stone steps. When we visited we picnicked on the site in the remains of the castle’s kitchen. At one point we split into two groups and played a vague game of hide and seek, which is very easily to do with all its dark chambers and passage ways. If you’re going to visit more than one Welsh castle during you holiday then it’s economical to invest in a CADW family ticket.

Caernarfon Castle

Such an amazing day - a truly amazing place and we all absolutely loved it here. There is a family ticket available for a really reasonable price, with under 5s going free. Entry into the castle also gives you admission into the exhibitions and two museums within the castle too. Or, there is a pass available to buy that gives you entry into the many castles around North Wales. You are free to wander around the castle and I would recommend that you buy a guide book as they are only very cheap but it makes for a much more interesting visit. You can wander up and down the turrets, on and around the battlements (as long as like me, you're not terrified of heights!) I would say as well that of course, medieval times weren't very pushchair friendly so leave it behind if possible and have the little one walk or use a carrier so you can really make the most of it. There are some really steep and winding staircases in some places though so you do need to keep a careful eye out on little ones. Really magical place and such an amazing sense of history here. Caernarfon is a great little town too, well worth a look around and take a look at the old town walls too. Great day out - we loved it!
