Caldey Island overview
Caldey Island is situated just off the coast of Pembrokeshire, and can be reached by regular boat trips from Tenby Harbour during the summer - weather permitting! The island is best known for the ...
monastery that is located at its centre, and after 100 years of worship the Cistercian monks of Caldey continue to reside here. Families can visit the monastery and a video centre, which give an insight into life at the monastery. It is also possible to attend one of the short chanted services in the Abbey Church, which form part of the daily prayer life of the monks. Other attractions on Caldey Island are the historic Old Priory, the medieval churches of St David and St Illtud, the post office which is also a Museum of the Islands history, the lighthouse which gives extensive views of the Pembrokeshire coast, Priory Bay beach and the free guided walk that examines the island's heritage. There are also shops which sell locally made chocolate, perfume and shortbread and the 'Tea Gardens' cafe, which has highchairs, bottle warming and toilets with baby changing facilities.
A lovely experience from start to finish

When we initially saw the boat that would be taking us to Caldey Island, we a bit wary as it seemed a bit small and the also the weather wasn't great. We needn't have worried as we all really enjoyed the trip over to Caldey Island. The waters were a bit choppy but we soom got used to it and enjoyed feeling the water on our faces. Someone who suffers from sea sickness may have struggled though. On our way there we did spot some grey seals which made the trip even more special. When we arrived we immediately headed for the monastery and found it to be a really calm and relaxed place, and the monks were very friendly. The Video presentation was also very informative about how the Monks live and wasn't as we had imagined. We then enjoyed a lovely lunch in the cafe on site, which was reasonably priced aswell as purchasing some chocolate that had been made by the monks to take home with us. After our meal, we decided to take a walk up to the lighthouse which was a lovely way to see the island. Once we got to the lighthouse we were able to walk to the top and you really did get some spectacular views from the top even with the weather being a bit grey. The walk up the lighthouse is not suitable for pushchairs so we carried our baby daughter up to the top whoch was quite hard work! It was then time to go home but we weren't too sad as we had the boat journey back to look forward to. We all really enjoyed our day out here.
