Family Days Out in York
|
York is a great choice for a family day out with lots to see and do with the children. Any visit to this ancient English town must include a wander down The Shambles, an extremely old, quaint street complete with overhanging 14th-century timber-framed buildings. The Shambles takes its name from an archaic term for an open-air slaughterhouse and though there are no butchers there any longer, the meat-hooks hanging outside many of the shops lining the street are a tell-tale sign of its former use! For something a little more grandiose visit York Minster one of the most spectacular cathedrals in Europe with its amazing architecture, beautifully stained glass and gruesome gargoyles. Take a trip round with one of the tour guides who will fill you in on the building’s long history and make the trip more entertaining for the children. York is also home to the largest railway museum in the world, the National Railway Museum, so if you’ve got any rail enthusiasts in your family this is definitely the place to head. Even if you haven’t though it’s worth a look as they have some truly fantastic exhibits including famous locomotives such as the world’s fastest steam engine Mallard and the Flying Scotsman.
