Wicked the Musical overview
Wicked has been enthralling family audiences since it arrived in the West End in 2006 with its alternative take on the backstory of the Wicked Witch of the West from the Wizard of Oz. The story ...
follows two young sorcery students and friends, Glinda and Elphaba, as their fates entwine and eventually separate following a chance encounter with the famous Wizard. A spectacular, magical musical with stunning songs and wonderful performances this is sure to be a hit with the whole family.
Fantastic!

I must admit that although I was really keen to see Wicked, I had started to read the book and had found it very complicated, and a bit of a struggle to get through. It seemed that you needed to have a fair bit of knowledge about the Wizard of Oz stories in order to get the most out of it. I'm happy to say that the musical is pitched perfectly, with references to the Wizard of Oz film for the fans (and I suspect many that went over my head) but with a plot that you can follow as a standalone story.
I went into watching it with (I thought) little prior knowledge, but was pleased to find that I recognised many of the songs. The staging was excellent and the story was gripping. We had very good seats in the stalls, and I have heard that this is the best place to sit.
The musical is recommended for ages 7 and up, although I did feel that it was quite intense and frightening in places. If your children enjoy musicals and are used to the theatre then it would be great for them, but I would recommend more for older children and teenagers.

Looks Good but complicated Story

Wicked is visually colourful and the `bubble` props are clever and do have the Wow! factor. The story line, however, is quite complicated and it is difficult to explain to young people. The musical is carried more for its visual display rather then its actual content. I love the London Musicals but they are expensive and if you are taking young children you don`t want them to be bored. I feel Wicked goes on too long and does get itself lost in its plot. Many children in the theatre did seem to really enjoy the show but with such competition as The Lion King and Shrek it would not be my first choice.
