Quiet, rural retreat

23 Jun 2011
Visited with: Infant, Child
We visited this campsite in the summer of 2010. What I really liked about the site even before we got there was that we could prebook a pitch online. Choosing your pitch was a really good idea given that we had a 4 year old and a 2 year old. We didn't want to be too near the entrance (traffic) or too far away from the toilet block (potty training!) so we were able to choose a quiet corner plot backing onto fields. There was plenty enough room on the plot for our huge 8 man tent and our car, plus room to put the table, rug, bikes etc. The kids had plenty of grassy space around (including a massive patch opposite our plot) where they could charge about safely and under our watchful eye. Unlike the larger campsites (and ones we've stayed on and hated!) where there is a bar and evening entertainment, the campsite was VERY quiet after sundown, meaning our two very tired children got a decent night's sleep without drunken revellers and loud music into the small hours. If you're looking for a clubhouse and lots of evening stuff to do then this site won't be your cup of tea - if like us all you want to do is sit outside the tent with a glass of wine while the little ones sleep, this is perfect. There is a child's playground on site (which closes at 9pm - perfect for us to reduce noise levels in the evenings, perhaps not so if you have older children as after 9pm there is nothing to do for teens). The playground is well equiped with climbing frames, swings and a slide, and is fenced in. There is a heated pool too - perfect for the kids whatever the weather. We chose this campsite because it had a pool, a bit of a novelty in this country on campsites! The site felt very safe, with the wardens patrolling every night between 9 and 10pm, a reassuring sight to know they were always around. There is a shop on site which even sold toys such as badminton raquets etc, great when the kids got bored of the toys we brought with us. They also do takeaway food, which is great and saves Mummy cooking every night! They have rules such as dogs must remain on the lead - this wasn't always adhered to by other campers which with a toddler made me slightly nervous, but not my biggest concern. The one 'child friendly' thing this site is missing is a family shower room or baby bathing area. My daughter wasn't keen on showers but by the end of the week had learned to live with them as there was no other choice. Although there is a lot of space outside of the shower cubicle, changing a 4 and 2 year old without any of us or the dry clothes getting soaked was nigh on impossible. Because of this omission I will drop a star that I will give this campsite, but on the whole it was a good place to stay. Also, with one toilet block I spent A LOT of time traipsing up and down the hill with my toddler for toilet breaks - if I'd taken a potty this wouldn't be a problem but just something to be aware of. Locally there's a lot to do - with beaches nearby (Gorran Haven was a hit with our two children) if you don't want to spend a fortune on entertaining the kids. Our kids were so exhausted with all the fresh country air they were flaked out most evenings by 8pm, leaving Mummy and Daddy to enjoy the peace and quiet of the Cornwall countryside. Would return now the kids are a bit older as getting them washed would be easier, but probably wouldn't come here with teenagers.
