The islanders say that in Antigua you can swim from a different beach every day of the year, so you can be sure of variety for your family holiday here. It is only a small island and they may have exaggerated but there are certainly lots of beaches with the softest powdered white sand fringed by seas of Titian blue and emerald green. It is almost worth the trip just to stand and dribble that famous sugar like sand between your toes. But will the kids be happy as well? All of the resorts we’ve chosen in Antigua are definitely child friendly with such facilities as separate swimming pools for children, organised kids club and of course sea based activities like snorkelling and fishing. The kids will also like the island itself with friendly people and interesting places to visit like Nelson’ dockyard in the main port, or a boat trip to the neighboring island of Barbuda. It is also so British and they drive on the left. You will love it!! Check out our great selection of Child Friendly holidays in Antigua below or read on for some tips on attractions and days out.
Top Tips for that extra special family holiday in Antigua
- Craftily squeeze in a bit of English history for the children while you are here. The historic Nelson's Dockyard is now a National Park and you will find it at English Harbour in the capital of St Johns. Modern interactive media explains the history of the dockyard from Georgian times, and there is also a replica of Darwin’s ship Discovery for the kids to learn a little of that historic voyage.
- Looking under the sea is a must. Take the kids to Bird Island where they can paddle canoes in and out of the mangroves on the lagoons before cooling off with a swim and a snorkel. Or take a boat trip out to the beautiful tropical coral reef off the shore for some serious snorkeling.
- Antigua is renowned for its Steel Band & Reggae music. Check your hotel for their evening entertainment programme and if it is not on the menu find out where it is on offer. It can become habit forming!
- There are ample opportunities for kayaking, power boating and hiking especially on and around the beautiful east coast of Antigua.
- Be sure to plan a family outing to St Johns on a Friday or Saturday morning. This is market time and the colourful scene amidst the tropical fruit and craft stalls makes for a really enjoyable outing for all.
