Family Holidays to Bavaria
|
Tell the children you are thinking of a family holiday in Germany and Bavaria is the place that they will have in their imagination. A land of fairytale castles, shrouded in mist; men in funny hats and leather shorts; cute wooden houses with geraniums in window boxes, gingerbread houses; mysterious forests and waterfalls tumbling from high snow-capped mountains. They are right! Bavaria is like this and they will not be disappointed. The real fairy tale castle of Neuschwanstein was the model for the one in Disneyland. Bavaria does have some of the most beautiful forests for walking or cycling and they will meet many hikers in leather shorts and feathered hats. The towns and villages do look like stage settings with their lovely painted wooden signs and stunning floral displays. Beautiful surroundings are all well and good, but that perfect family holiday requires a little bit more and Bavaria definitely has that extra. There are Aqua Parks attached to its lakes, scary rides to take on sleds, skis or rail tracks down its mountains. The capital of Bavaria, Munich, also has numerous attractions for children such as the Deutsches Museum, Germany’s most childfriendly Science Museum, the BMW factory tour or a tour of the World Cup Stadium. For younger children some of Germany’s top theme parks are found in Bavaria including a huge Legoland and the Playmobil Fun Park. There is even the world famous Steiff Teddy Bears Museum near Ulm. It is not surprising that Bavaria is the top holiday destination for many German families and as most Bavarians are both friendly and speak good English why not plan your family holiday there too? Change your destination: Germany overview > Berlin > Black Forest > Cologne > Hamburg > Munich > Sightseeing and Family Days Out in Bavaria ![]() - Neuschwanstein’s famous castle must be top of the list. It just looks like a fairytale castle and that is not surprising as it was designed for Bavaria’s King Ludwig to look like one. The setting is just awesome and its creepy Gothic interior is just where you would expect the wicked Queen of the witches to live. - Linderhof Palace is another ex -Royal stately home surrounded by stunning scenery. For children the main attraction will be the gardens with a dancing fountain display to enjoy every hour on the hour during summer. - Zugspitze, next to the picturesque town of Garmisch is Germany's highest mountain and there is a rack-and-pinion railway that runs almost to the top. The views on the way up and from its summit are as spectacular as you can imagine. It is a favourite spot for hang gliders and watching them leap out and drift down provides great entertainment. Trails head out along the ridges so wear sensible shoes and pack a picnic. For a different perspective take the cable car on either the way up or down. - Bavaria is renowned for its scenic lakes. How can they not be scenic with Alpine mountains as their backgrounds? The larger ones like Chiemsee have idyllic islands with romantic castles on them to visit, built of course by good old King Ludwig. Possibly the recipe for a perfect family day out is: Choose a large Bavarian Lake. Take a ferry ride to see a castle. Have a sunbathe and a swim from a sandy beach. Take a gentle stroll or bicycle ride along a forest trail. Have lunch in a lakeside cafe with those Alps to look at and congratulate yourself on choosing Bavaria for your family holiday. - Teddy Bears were invented in Bavaria in the little village of Giengen an der Brenz, near Ulm Germany. The Teddy Bear factory is still in the capable hands of the original Steiff family and their Welt von Steiff or World of Steiff tour will absolutely delight any youngster with magical workshops and talking toys. Tours run every day in English. - Bavaria’s capital city, Munich (Munchen), also has a great range of attractions for family outings from the BMW factory tour to the fantastic hands on for kids Deutsches Museum. Check out the suggestions on our Munich page. Active Family Days Out in Bavaria - Bavarian lakes are not only for sightseeing. Most of the larger ones, like Lake Starnberg close to Munich, are where the children can swim, sail or water-ski.
- Wherever you are in Bavaria there are always well marked walking trails and some of the prettiest countryside in Germany to walk through. Bring your walking boots and check out which walks in the area would suit your family. - Riding Germany’s longest Rodelbahn at Alpsee Bergwelt in the Allgäu is a must if you are in the area. A Rodelbahn is a track built down the side of a mountain with lots of curves and narrow bridges. You sit on a little trolley then whiz down as fast as you can. There's no need for any steering, but you do have brakes. This one is 3km long and takes seven to ten minutes to descend. Just awesome! - For younger children, the Playmobile Fun Park in Zindorf is Bavaria’s number one Activity Park. Kids will love the many imaginative settings from Wild West city to Jungle Ruin and the opportunity to scramble and climb in the many safe play areas. There is also an enormous indoor play area so it makes a great wet weather option. - For an active Wet Day Out head for Prienavera on Lake Chiemsee. The children can have fun in the stream-canals, waterfalls, swimming pools, shallow paddling pools and water slides while you enjoy a hot Jacuzzi. If the weather is hot there is a summer beach area with a playground. - For more exciting action take a visit to LEGOLAND, Bavaria’s most popular Activity Park in Günzburg The usual high- speed, knuckle- clenching rides in trains, canoes or swinging cradles are all here plus the most amazing creations built from an inexhaustible supply of Lego’s famous bricks. The play areas for youngsters are especially good. - A visit to a salt mine will probably not be on your children’s list of fun things to do. So why do tens of thousand of German children visit the salt mines in Berchtesgaden every year? Maybe the long wooden slide down into the mine is the attraction or the great white caverns underground. And the little high speed train on the way out of the mine will leave you longing for more! If you are in the area its definitely worth a visit. |
