Family Holidays in the Black Forest
|
The Black Forest is one of Germany’s top family holiday destinations and it is easy to see why. The Black Forest is everything you expect of a genuine forest with seemingly endless stands of pines and birches and if it wasn’t for the well labelled walking trails you could easily get lost like Hansel and Gretel. In fact the reason the Black Forest is so popular with children is that it is a bit like something out of a fairy tale, including the Ginger Bread houses. Ruined castles and picturesque towns are mixed up with lakes, impossibly green pastures and cool mountain streams. For families who like the great outdoors the Black Forest offers everything from trekking to sailing in the most beautiful of surroundings and comfort. Added attractions for the children include not only the largest Summer Activity Park in Europe at ‘Europa Park’ but also the largest cuckoo clock that they can actually walk inside. A holiday here is also very affordable especially with the Black Forest Card where this one ticket covers the whole family for unlimited entrance to all the major attractions in and around the forest. Just one more incentive for a holiday here: Black Forest Gateau. The whole family will deserve a little reward after all that exercise! GERMAN NATIONAL TOURIST OFFICE >
Change your destination: Germany overview > Bavaria > Berlin > Cologne > Hamburg > Munich > Family Days Out in the Black Forest - Fine Weather ![]() - The most central town in the Black Forest is Freudenstadt. Take off from here on one of the many hiking, biking or ski-trails and explore! Freudenstadt itself is just beautiful; its main colonnaded market square is the largest in Europe and it makes an ideal base for a holiday in the region.
- From Freiburg, which is another delightful town to explore or stay in, take a trip on the Schauinsland Cable Car, the longest in Germany. The views across the forest and over to France are incredible. At the top there are marked trails for walking and mountain restaurants and a cafe if you don’t want to take a picnic. - Triberg is yet another beautiful Black Forest town, famous for its cuckoo clocks and picturesque frescoed houses. The main attraction for children though is its waterfall, the highest in Germany and right in the centre of town. There are paths and forest trails up and around it with many opportunities to get wet! ! - For swimming in summer or just messing about on the ice in winter take the children to Lake Titisee near Neustadt and yes it is also a lovely little town! - Aqua parks are also places where children love to get wet and the Ravensburger Spieleland has every type of ride from Wild River rafting to play ponds for the little ones. It is near Ravensburg, very close to Bodensee (Lake Constance) where there are also lots of opportunities for fun in the water. Ravensburg is also the home of the World famous puzzle factory. Family days out in the Black Forest - Whatever the weather - A train ride, particularly if the gauge is narrow, there is a steam engine and there are scary bridges to cross, is naturally very popular with children. Many of the railways in the Black Forest fit this prescription. One of the most popular is the Sauschwänzlebahn (Pigtail Railway), which wiggles its way through the valleys around the town of Blumberg in the Southern part of the Forest. Another longer and very popular one runs from Gengenbach, near Strasbourg to St. Georgen or Triberg All of these towns are also just so picturesque so allow yourself ample time to sightsee before catching the train. - For a memorable day out in the car take the Black Forest High Road. It meanders through some of the prettiest and impressive scenery between Baden-Baden and Freudenstadt with many places to stop, admire and the view, take a stroll or buy souvenirs. - A boat trip is usually more popular with the kids than any car journey. A very enjoyable one to take departs from the famous University town of Heidelberg and runs along the river Neckar - When you’ve exhausted all that walking or skiing, railroading or boating, sightseeing or sailing, really make the children’s holiday with a day at Europa-Park, Germany’s largest and most beautiful seasonal theme park It is in Rust, between Freiburg and Strasbourg. Not only do they have every kind of scary and non-scary ride, they have non-stop shows on both stage and in their 4D cinema. It really is something special and the kids will love it Family Savings - The Black Forest Card Paying admission fees for a family on holiday can be very expensive. Check out The Black Forest Card 'SchwarzwaldCard’ which offers free admission for swimming pools and spa resorts, theme and leisure parks (even 1 admission to Europa-Park) cable railways, ski lifts, boat trips and many other attractions. It is available in all tourist offices in the region. |
