Croatia offers an amazing choice of family holiday destinations from beach to mountainside to historic town, or any combination of the three. This scenic part of former Yugoslavia is famous for both the coastline with hundreds of islands, and the beautiful mountainous interior. The picturesque Croatian towns like Dubrovnik, Sibenik or Split have a history and architecture deriving from Roman, Venetian and Turkish influences. And that does not include a century or so in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, or the Italian flavour of the Istrian Peninsula. Croatia’s popularity in the family holiday stakes is also due to the climate, as this area of Southern Europe is one of the sunniest. Whichever region appeals to you Childfriendly has some great family holiday ideas. A quiet fishing village close to the Medieval town of Korcula, an adventure holiday in the Plitvice Lake National Park, a comfortable apartment, Holiday Village or Holiday Park next to the beach or maybe a luxury hotel with all mod cons. Top Tips for that extra special family holiday in Croatia:
- Spend a day or two in one of Croatia’s many wonderful historic towns such as Split, the walled city of Dubrovnik, once one of Venice’s major ports or the capital, Zagreb, with its Austro-Hungarian architecture and outdoor coffee shops as good as the ones in Vienna.
- Take a ferry or a boat tour around one of the many hundreds of islands. Kids will enjoy the ride and many have interesting touristy towns such as Hvar, Rovinj or Korcula.
- The National parks of Croatia are really spectacular, especially the ones set in the famous Karst limestone areas with unbelievably crystal clear waters. The most famous are the Plitvice Lakes, which can be explored by boat, boardwalks or bikes.
- Or just take a drive inland, almost anywhere. Leave the busy holiday coast, and within minutes you’re in a different world of meandering country lanes and pretty hill towns.
- Croatia was once an important Roman Colony and there are some truly amazing reminders such as the amphitheatre at Pula, now used as a venue for opera and pop concerts, or the vast ruins of Emperor Diocletian’s palace in Split.
