Family Holidays to Germany
|
Whatever the season, Germany is a great place for a family holiday. In summer everybody likes to be close to the water and there are a huge variety of places for the children to splash about. There are the rivers, streams and pools of Germany’s beautiful city parks; the Alpine fed lakes like Bodensee in South Germany; the beaches of North Sea islands like Syllt or Helgoland; the rapidly growing seaside resorts of the Baltic such as Kühlungsborn and Heiligendamm and of course every region has its own Aqua Park. Spring and autumn are the best time for Germany’s most popular pastime: hiking and biking. There are thousands of kilometres of well-maintained and signposted trails from the Harz Mountains to the Black Forest. During the Winter there is skiing, snowboarding and tobogganing in numerous ski resorts and of course over the Festive Season almost every town in Germany has its own Christmas Market with a magic that delights the whole family. At any time of the year there are endless attractions for children in Germany’s great cities. The Deutches Museum in Munich is possibly the most childfriendly Science Museum in Europe. Berlin’s famous Zoo and the enormous entertainment complex in the Potsdamer Platz are a must for any holiday in this fantastic city. Then there’s the chocolate factory in Cologne, Europapark, Europe’s largest Activity Park just outside Stuttgart and the world’s largest miniature railways system in Hamburg. Plus fabulous scenery, gorgeous beflowered towns and villages, historic palaces, fairytale castles. The great thing is you don’t really need to speak German, as everyone seems to want to practise their English! You can see why Germany really is a serious contender for your precious family holiday.
GERMAN NATIONAL TOURIST OFFICE > Change your destination: Berlin > Bavaria > Black Forest > Cologne > Hamburg > Munich > Popular Regions in Germany German holidaymakers generally head to either the Northern Coasts for a beach holiday or to the hills and forested regions of the centre and South. The prettiest scenery is in the Black Forest Region and in Bavaria (voted top holiday destination in a recent poll) Check out the many attractions of both these regions. Popular Cities in Germany Berlin, the capital, must come top with Tiergarten Park, the world’s largest inner city park, a world famous zoo and an excellent selection of indoor entertainment centres such as the one in the Potsdamer Platz. Munich must be added to the list not only for its famous childfriendly Deutchemuseum and English Park but also for its location in beautiful Bavaria. Then there is the amazing seaport city of Hamburg or the riverside port city of Cologne, both with so many attractions for children. Check out the details for the ones that interest you on our site. Popular Family Attractions in Germany
For motorcar enthusiasts, the factory tours, hands on exhibitions and state of the art museums of its major car manufacturers are a must. The main ones are BMW World near The Mercedes Benz Museum The newly opened Porsche Museum near Stuttgart and The Volkswagen works in Wolfsburg in Central Germany.
For the railway fans in the family. The Germans are just as enthusiastic about maintaining their most picturesque lines and historic trains as we are, but have possibly more scenic routes for them to chug over. For example if you are on holiday in the South check out these great railway journeys. For animal fans in the family. Some of the best zoos in Europe are in Germany. Check out our city attraction pages for Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and Cologne for details. For kids with enquiring minds, Germany has made an enormous and successful effort to ensure its major museums and galleries are child friendly and its exhibits are explained in English. Two outstanding ones are the huge Museum of Technology in Berlin and the amazing Science and Technology Museum, the Deutsches Museum in Munich. For just plain fun, Germany has more than its share of huge, imaginative Activity and Aqua Parks. The most visited ones are Europa Park, near the Black Forest, which is Germany's biggest theme park. Another must for a visit is the popular Legoland theme park in Bavaria. Food for the kids in Germany
The world’s most famous foods for kids were invented here in Germany and are just as tasty today. Hamburgers and Frankfurters taste fantastic particularly from an outside grill on a cool or cold evening. If you want to be adventurous ask for a Bratwurst, a particularly tasty sausage. Would not be surprised if a Bratty becomes just as famous as Hamburger or Hot Dog in the future. A German even invented the doughnut, although they are called ‘Berliner’ here. You can see why President Kennedy got a great laugh when he said ‘ Ich bin ein Berliner’. For eating out in general, well this is the land of hearty eaters and it is so easy to find a modestly priced restaurant or cafe everywhere you go.
Getting around Germany This is one of the reasons why a holiday in Germany is so pleasurable whatever your mode of transport. The German Railways are wonderful! Buy a ticket from any mainline ticket office, where they naturally speak fluent English, and you are told where to stand and on which platform for your carriage, for a train which arrives on time! Public transport within city limits is also just as clean and efficient and all offer, one or three day passes at great rates (Children also pay nothing on Deutsche Bahn Trains if travelling with their parents or grand parents). Many places also have integrated transport and tourist entry cards like the Berlin Welcome Card that give considerable savings. As for driving, well sufficient to say the Germans also invented the motorway (Autobahn), which are plentiful and free. Plus there are probably more bicycle lanes and well-marked walking trails than any other country in the world. Enjoy! |
