Kefalonia has become one of the most popular family holiday destinations after the success of the film Captain Corelli’s Mandarin. Kefalonia is quite a large island, with scenic rocky pebbly beaches set in little coves in the North, and long sandy beaches along the Southern coast. Most of our resorts are situated on these Southern beaches and have all the modern facilities you need to make your family holiday both enjoyable and comfortable. The interior of the island is mountainous and if you enjoy taking the family out for a weekend drive then you will really enjoy exploring the dramatic scenery on Kefalonia’s narrow but well maintained roads. The resort centres like Lassi and Skala do tend to be a bit crowded in high season because of their closeness to amazing wide sandy beaches, but quieter spots are available close by. The island has many little towns from vibrant Argostoli and the capital, Kefalonia, to small fishing villages that are well worth visiting for a taste of traditional Greek life.Check out our great selection of Child Friendly holidays in Kefalonia below or read on for some tips on attractions and days out.
Top Tips for that extra special family holiday in Kefalonia
- The capital of the island, Argostoli, is a very attractive town. It is well worth spending some time strolling the streets or sitting in the main square.
- If you want a drive with a great view at the end of it, then take the road to the top of Mount Aenos. The last few kilometres are unmade road but the views over the sea at the end are just breathtaking.
- The caves at Melissani are one of Kefalonia’s main tourist attractions. Stalactites hang down over an underground lake, which has an amazing range of colours. The children will enjoy a trip on one of the little boats used to tour the caves.
- Kids like boat trips and a really inexpensive one is the Argostoli to Lixouri ferry, which takes just half an hour along the islands coastline, with a different town to explore at either end. You can do the return trip by bus if you want a change of transport.
- For a really good family day out then take a ferry to another nearby Greek island like Lefkas, Zante or Ithaca. Of course boats are also available for hire but can be a bit expensive.
